Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

WWLegal.com is a legal website which went online in late August 2000. It provides a one-stop centre for people to find lawyers.

The website will be officially launched tomorrow so there will be a lot to look out for in the coming days. WWLegal.com embodies the efforts of a team of lawyers to start a community that knows and cares about the rights of every individual.

To this end, they have devised a faster and easier way for clients to engage lawyers. Their legal-case management software is also available online for lawyers and clients to check the progress of their case(s).

Of particular interest to many of you will be the website's Know Your Rights section, where you can read all their Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS) and answers on Family Law, Contract law, and Criminal Law. You can find out more about the different courts, such as Magistrates' Courts and the High Court, operating in Singapore and get to know about time limits and giving evidence.

Why not pay them a visit today? They are at WWLegal.com.

We expect to receive our 500,000th hit tomorrow!

Wednesday 20 Sep 2000

The Housing & Development Board (HDB) announced yesterday that it will take back the flat of killer-litter offender Madam Wong Sook Ying, 47, immediately. It decided to mete out the harshest punishment to her as she is a repeat offender. It will give another four offenders and their families six months to move out of their HDB flats, and issue final warning letters to another four offenders. The HDB said that it had based its decision on revised guidelines concerning convicted killer-litter offenders.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) will start its own gifted- education programme next July with 300 hand-picked undergraduates. These students will be able to take on a wide range of subjects, and decide on their degree course at the end of the first year. They will also be offered a one-year immersion stint in a leading overseas university. To get into this elite programme, they have to demonstrate, in personal essays and interviews, that they have that "extra something". NUS's Vice Chancellor, Professor Shih Choon Fong revealed this yesterday.

Asia

Beijing: China's largest website, sina.com, has come under fire because its name "sina" reminded many Chinese of how their country was called by Japan during World War II. Many readers wrote to the China Youth Daily complaining about the name and urging the website to change it, the newspaper reported.

Jakarta: Indonesian legislators yesterday accused President Abdurrahman Wahid of having violated the law by dismissing the national police chief without consulting them.

Around the world

Los Angeles: A 19-year-old Oklahoma University student could face criminal charges for creating a Napster-like program that allowed songs to be transferred via the Internet. The student could face charges of copyright infringement after police found as many as 1000 Internet-music files on his computer, which they seized from his dormitory room after officials were notified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as part of its crusade against Internet piracy.
