Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Budak
Pantai (kids of the beach in Malay) found fame when they won
the 1994 Rolling Good Times TV Beach Boys Contest in Singapore.
They have not looked back since.
Singapore's
Beach Boys prefer to be referred to always as Budak Pantai only,
with no translation. The group was formed in August 1994
specially for the Rolling Good Times Beach Boys singing contest.
Just who are they? Not in order of age, height, weight,
importance or bovine inclinations whatsoever: Joe, Gordon, Kah
Keh, Danny and Michael.
Their type of
singing? Reply: "Too broke to buy electric
instruments type singing (A cappella) but sometimes we accompany
the guitar that Danny plays which is Michael's."
Their type of
Songs? Reply: "Pop. ( and a bit of bossanova and
Latin ), eg, Runaway - Janet Jackson, You to me are Everything,
Say Yes - Chge & Aska. Languages used?: Mandarin, Japanese,
some Malay, English."
Where have they sung? Reply: "Almost anywhere
you name it, except perhaps during the Mongolian courtship
ceremonies."
Discography?: Reply: "Yes we do have one!!!"

Singapore's non-oil exports
shot up a whopping 27.3% in August compared to last year, taking the
month's exports to a record S$10.7 billion. The phenomenal growth in the
export of Singapore-made goods was driven by a buoyant market for
electronic products and sustained demand from Asian economies.
Two road sweepers were
killed when an out-of-control car mounted the kerb at Jurong Town Hall
Road at about 9am on Sunday. Madam Mulumathi V Pillai, 53, and Madam
Palaniandy Vijeyaletchimi, 44, died instantly in the accident. The
driver, a 27-year-old man, was not injured.
There are already 250,000

Asia
Jakarta: President
Abdurrahman Wahid sacked national police chief General Rusdihardjo
yesterday, after police failed to arrest the youngest son of former
president Suharto who the Indonesian leader suggested could have been
behind the recent spate of bombings in the capital.
Hongkong: Hongkong's medical
association has proposed that doctors' names be carried on prescriptions
written out at public hospitals so as to increase accountability and
ensure patient safety, following a spate of prescription errors. The
Medical Incident Reporting Programme said it had received 7,178
"incidents" in the fourth quarter of last year. Of these, 60%
were due to prescription errors, 30% to incomplete prescriptions, 2% to
dispensing faults and the rest to administration errors.
Around the world
London: Doctors and nurses
expected a windfall yesterday as the government was due to announce new
pay incentives to tackle the staffing crisis in the National Health
Service (NHS). The Times newspaper reported that, among other things,
nurses could receive a new "recruitment and retention"
allowance of up to GBP1,000 (S$2,500).
