Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Hallo everyone
Dating websites have been sprouting roots everywhere on the
Internet. We don't aim to be one, but since the subject of
dating invariably involves the issue of marriage - and we are
indeed concerned about the rising number of our young preferring
to remain unmarried - we have decided to join in the fray and
introduce a DATING section on our website.
Our
Dating section can't compete with the others on the Internet for
the attention of everyone. We also do not aim to compete. Our
intention is to put into place a mechanism for all you
youngsters, as well as those young at heart, to mingle with
like-minded peers.
For
a start, we have started a Dating Board for you to pin
whatever notes you may fancy - about yourself, your likes,
dislikes, what you look for in a partner or friend, etc.. All
you need do afterwards is wait for someone to respond to your
message, and then take it from there.
Of
course, this is rather rudimentary - we do not have the software
for a chatzone - but, we'll see how it goes first. If this new
section attracts interest from all you folks out there, then, we
will work towards getting the infrastructure in place for a more
responsive and sophisticated system to keep you coming back to
the section for more.
We
will also be posting articles on dating, and related stuff in
the coming weeks. This is something totally new to us, so please
bear with us while we strive to make our new Dating section work
for you. To go directly to our Dating section, click DATING.
We received our
400,000th hit on 22 Aug 2000!

About 300 residents at a
condominium block in Lorong Chuan had their water supply cut off for
several hours last Friday after the management council discovered a tank
was contaminated. The complaints came from the residents of Block 244,
one of five blocks in the condominium. The PUB officers collected
samples of the tank water for tests and plumbers were called in to
disinfect the tank and ensure the water was safe before the supply was
restored.

Asia
Manila: As Philippine troops
continued to bombard Abu Sayyaf rebel camps yesterday, the authorities
said six kidnappers had been killed and 20 others arrested. They said
all 23 hostages, including six foreigners, were still alive but were
being used as human shields by rebels fleeing from advancing troops by
going deeper into the jungles of Jolo island.
Seoul: South Korea has
started work on relinking a cross-border railway line in what is seen as
yet another symbol of reunification between the two Koreas. The line -
which would connect the southern capital, Seoul, to the North Korean
city of Shinuiju, on its northern border with China - was cut shortly
after the end of the war in 1953.
Beijing: The authorities in
southern China have handed out fines and other punishment to health
workers who helped parents learn the sex of their unborn children
illegally, Chinese media reported yesterday. With most Chinese families
restricted to just one child, there is strong pressure to meet the
traditional demand for male heirs. Female foetuses are often aborted,
contributing to a growing gender imbalance in China that sees 120 boys
born for every 100 girls.
Around the world
Washington: President Bill
Clinton has proposed a US$1 billion (S$1.73 billion) legislation to
raise staffing levels and improve care in the nation's nursing homes,
citing a recent government study that showed elderly residents who
receive less attention from nursing aides suffer more health problems.
