Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Tales In A Box - 2 puppet shows for children
The Finger
Players, a professional puppetry company in Singapore, is
presenting Tales In A Box - 2 puppet shows for
children 3 years and up, as well as the young-at-heart, from 10
- 12 Nov 2000.
The first, Peach
Boy, is adapted from a Japanese folktale. It's about an old
couple who have been longing for a child. When a little boy
suddenly jumps out from a peach into their lives, their days and
nights are immediately brightened. But, Momotaro, or Peach Boy,
has a mission beyond the old couple's wildest imaginations.
Dragon
Dance is the second item featured. Have you ever wondered
why the Chinese do the Dragon Dance? The Finger Players will
take you to the root of this popular Chinese folktale with lots
of songs, a little dancing and some very clever puppets.
Dragon Dance
was performed recently at the International Puppetry Festival in
Seoul, South Korea, to much acclaim. Tales In A Box was first
performed at The Necessary Stage's Marine Parade Theatre
Festival last August to sold-out houses. Do not miss this event!
Tales In A
Box takes place at The Pavilion, Far East Square. 10 - 11 Nov
2000 8pm, 11 - 12 Nov 2000 3pm. Tickets at S$12 are
available at all SISTIC outlets. Call (65) 348 5555 or click SISTIC. For more

Thursday's News
The maid-abuse trial of
former TV presenter Zahara Abdul Lateef has been postponed because she
is recovering from an operation. Zahara, 39, who was the anchor woman in
Channel NewsAsia's current-affairs programme, In Conversation, was to
have gone on trial yesterday for allegedly pouring hot water on her
Indonesian maid, Miss Titik Rinawati, 18.
To date, 77,000 ducks have
been adopted for The Straits Times Million Dollar Duck Race which will
take place on 12 Nov 2000 at the Singapore River.
From 1 Jan 2001, all
insurance agents in Singapore will have to conduct a
"fact-finding" exercise before selling policies to their
clients. This involves finding out about their client's financial
position, risk tolerance and investment objectives. And even though
clients are allowed to "opt out" of the exercise, industry
players say steps are being taken to ensure this is kept to a minimum.
Asia
Manila: Philippine
opposition legislators yesterday filed a formal impeachment motion to
remove President Joseph Estrada from office for allegedly taking bribes
from gambling bosses. But the tedious legal process is doomed to fail
due to a lack of support.
Hongkong: The major
Chinese-language newspapers here yesterday raised their cover prices by
HK$1 (S$0.23) to HK$6 (S$1.36) ending a five-year price freeze. The
increase comes at a time when the cost of newsprint has increased
substantially in the past 12 months.
Around the world
London: All youngsters aged
four in Britain will be given a compulsory test before they start
school, so that their progress in the early years of their education can
be assessed accurately. The government has decided to introduce the
compulsory tests despite criticism that children already face a non-stop
series of exams from the age of five to the time they finish their
A-levels.
