In Singapore

Singapore has managed to stay as the world's second-most-competitive country, after the United States, the latest World Competitiveness Report released here yesterday reported.

Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong reassured Hongkong yesterday that neither the Singapore government nor its people regarded the territory as enemy.

Despite a strong overnight rebound on Wall Street, Asian investors remained on edge yesterday, fearing that stocks would resume their falls.

Asia

Sydney: Australia's first mass DNA screening has scored an initial success. A 44-year-old man was charged in court yesterday with raping a 91-year-old woman.

Around the world

Washington: World financial leaders, unscathed after a week of street protests that tangled celebration with challenge, held out fresh promises to speed up debt relief for the poorest nations and to fight the Aids epidemic.

London: Britain's famous Sandhurst Royal Military Academy will open a four-day leadership course for civilians for the first time in its history, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.
