Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Hot Picnic Ideas
Have you run out of ideas where to take your kids out for a day of fun? How about having a picnic? You can't have a picnic without food so here are some ideas for your picnic basket. Two important points to consider when you are planning the menu: First, note that our weather is hot and humid and many foods do not keep well under such conditions. Second, picnic foods should be easy to eat, easy to transport, delicious and nutritious at the same time. So what are suitable picnic foods? Try making your own sandwiches with cheese, tuna, sardine or chicken. Add in sliced cucumber and lettuce only when you are ready to eat so that the sandwiches don't turn soggy. Muffins, scones, breads and buns are ideal. Serve them with cheese cubes or jam spreads if you wish. For something more filling, try boiled pasta with broccoli and shredded chicken. Sauces should be packed in a separate container. For fried bee hoon, add more vegetables like cabbage, carrots and bean sprouts. Fish balls and grilled chicken wings also add variety. For refreshing desserts, fruits, such as apples, bananas and grapes, are good choices. As a rule-of-thumb, allow cooked food to cool before you pack. Otherwise, the trapped steam will make the food soggy. For drinks, bring mineral water or packets of unsweetened fruit juices in a chiller. Do remember to keep all foods away from direct heat throughout the picnic. And don't forget to clean your hands before preparing or eating the food. A man who suffers from schizophrenia was sentenced to six weeks in jail by a magistrate's court on 12 Oct 2000 for throwing a wooden chair from the seventh storey of Block 439 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 on 11 Jul 2000. TAN Kok Chuan, 26, had pleaded guilty to a charge of endangering human lives and the personal safety of others.
A conman who cooked up investment and holiday plans and managed to dupe four people, including two TCS part-time artistes, of more than S$66000 was sentenced to 42 months jail on 11 Oct 2000 by a district court. LEE Chun Beng, 32, pleaded guilty to two charges of criminal breach of trust and two counts of cheating.

South Korea: South Korean President KIM Dae Jung, 76, became the first winner of the Nobel Peace Prize of the 21st century yesterday.
Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian government yesterday ordered the closure of more than 3000 government-run childcare centres and kindergartens nationwide for an indefinite period, as a precaution against the spread of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD).
Tokyo: The number of people arrested by Japanese police for sexual molestation rose by 25% last year, the Justice Ministry's white paper on crime showed yesterday. It said the number of molest cases rose by 25.8% to 5346 cases and that the rise probably reflected a change in attitudes among women. "We see a trend that more women are speaking up against such crimes. This was considered shameful in the past," a researcher associated with the report said.
