Today Friday 14 Apr 2000 In Singapore A new part-time scheme, which hopes to draw former trained teachers to return to teaching, will start in June. Announcing the move yesterday, Education Minister Teo Chee Hean said that the " flexible and attractive" terms would allow the ministry to tap a pool of trained and experienced former teachers. Two former state boxers, including a seven-time national champion, were yesterday convicted of stabbing a man each at a party in Aljunied 18 months ago. R Yoganathan, 35, was sentenced to four years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane for stabbing newspaper delivery man Chandrasekar Vadivelu, 33. Mr Chandraskar died of an asthmatic attack on the same day. Former national champion Jagdew Singh, 34, was sentenced to two years' jail and six strokes of the cane for stabbing technician Anandan Joseph, 25. Asia Jakarta: The Indonesian government closed in on former President Suharto yesterday, banning him from leaving the capital and treatening house arrest. Around the world Detroit: A former sailor accused of strangling four prostitutes here may be linked to similar murders in three other states and in several countries visted by the US Navy ship on which he served, Detroit's police chief said.
