Applying For A Personal Loan Part 2

Last week, we went through the maths part of personal loans. Today, we will walk through the whole process of applying for a loan.

You can apply for a loan just by submitting an application, through online terminals or by post, if you do not wish to sit in front of someone from the bank. Some banks, such as Citibank NA, let you get a loan without you having to see anyone at all.

You can also walk into a bank branch and approach its personal financial consultant. The consultant has a pc with software that allows him to work out just how much you can loan.  Just keep this in mind - the consultant sitting in front of you may just be a clerk and have no authority whatsoever to decide the outcome of your application, no matter how high sounding his title may be. Just take a look at his name card. If it doesn't say Manager or Asst Manager, he's a clerk.

The consultant will try to squeeze out of you whatever information on your financial affairs he can get his hands on (and he's good at it), which means at the end of the interview he will have worked out all your financial commitments from whatever loans or overdrafts you have with other banks. Simply put, if your commitments are high vis-a-vis your income, you won't get your loan from this bank. So, come to the bank prepared and say what you have to say, nothing more. Usually, if your monthly commitments exceed 40% of your net monthly income (net means CPF already deducted), you won't get your loan. More...

In Singapore

At the NTUC triennial delegates conference yesterday, Acting Prime Minister BG Lee Hsien Loong said that the government's response to the disparity in income between  the top and bottom earners is to keep on emphasising education and training, upgrading older workers, seeking new investments,  creating new jobs and enhancing the assets of Singaporeans.

A Honda Civic burst into flames at a carpark in Hougang Avenue 8 early yesterday, burning to death the driver, its sole occupant.

There is nothing distinctive about 1.99. So, more than one shop or chain can use that in its name, said the Court of Appeal. It has overturned an earlier High Court ruling that only One.99 shop, started by Kowloon-born former model Nanz Chong in 1997, can call itself by that name.

Asia

Jakarta: Indonesia's former President Suharto was yesterday banned from leaving the country over an investigation into alleged corruption in charities he formerly controlled, a state investigator said.

Around the world

London: Scotland Yard is taking urgent action after Britain's biggest Chinese community complained angrily of a rising tide of attacks in restaurants and takeaway shops. A dossier detailing 15 cases of racially-motivated violence has been handed over to the police.
