Today Wednesday 12 Apr 2000 In Singapore More lawyers should acquire qualifications to practise in New York and London, the top financial centres, for a suitable period, to obtain the experience and skills in international financial work, said Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew at the Millennium Law Conference Gala Dinner last night. As early as the first quarter of next year, it may take no longer than 24 hours to clear a cheque. This is because of a new system, to be installed, called cheque truncation or the electronic imaging of cheques for sorting and payment. With this system, there is no need for cheques to be physically transported between banks and the clearing house. Instead, cheques are scanned at the presenting bank and images are sent electronically to the clearing house and paying banks for their processing. Workers at a Pasir Panjang construction site watched in horror as a Bangladeshi workerwas flung off a platform, and another pinned against a wall in a site mishap that left two dead and two hurt yesterday. Asia Sdyney: A boat carrying up to 220 suspected illegal immigrants bound for Australia has disappeared and may have sunk, Australian immigration officials said here yesterday. Around the world Sao Paulo: Five circus lions, which had not eaten for four days, killed a six-year-old Brazilian boy, newspapers here reported.
