Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Thursday's News

Workers will get back another 4% from their employers' contribution to their Central Provident Fund (CPF) from January 2001. The restoration will take employers' contribution to their workers' CPF to 16% of monthly salary. The higher-than- expected restoration was announced by the Manpower Ministry yesterday.

More than 2000 teenage girls, some as young as 13, had abortions last year. None of them needed their parents' consent under the law and this law is not going to change, said Health Minister LIM Hng Kiang in a written reply on Monday in response to Nominated Member of 'Parliament Claire Chiang's request for the Termination of Pregnancy Act to be amended to require youths aged 13 to 21 to get their parents' consent for an abortion.

Singapore won a seat in the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday with 168 out of 173 votes.

Asia

Johor Baru, Malaysia: All kindergartens and childcare centres here will close for two weeks to stop the rising incidence of hand, foot and mouth disease, said State Health Committee chairman Halimah Saddique. Johor has the highest infection rate with over 300 cases this year - a three-year-old boy died last week.

Johor Bahru: There is no limit on Singapore- registered cars filling up at petrol kiosks in Johor Baru, according to the Malaysian Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry. The ministry said foreign drivers need not worry about the limit which it said had been imposed on foreign-registered cars in the northern states of the peninsular - Kelantan, Perlis, Kedah and Perak. The 20-litre limit has caused confusion since its enforcement last week.

Hanoi: Torrential rains lashed central and southern Vietnam, sparking landslides and flash floods which killed at least six people, relief officials said yesterday.

Around the world

London: Britain should be turned into "a community of communities" modelled along the lines of successful multi-cultural societies in South-east Asia, a blue-ribbon panel has recommended in a long-awaited report, The Future of Multi-ethnic Britain, published today by 23 leading peers, academics, lawyers, sociologists and writers. It is expected to be an important blueprint for Labour government policies on race relations for years to come.
