Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Tuesday 10 Oct 2000 Tuesday's News Parliament yesterday passed the Compulsory Education Bill, making education compulsory in national primary schools for six years. All children born from 1 Jan 1996 must be registered in Primary 1 from 2003. If their parents fail to register them, the Ministry of Education and counsellors swing into action. If counseling and mediation fail, parents can be fined up to S$5000 by the courts or jailed. Children with disabilities who need special education are exempted. Also exempted are those attending the six madrasahs or Islamic schools and the privately-run San Yu Adventist School. Indonesian maid Ikaeshi Dulkolid, 16, was yesterday sentenced to a maximum two-years' jail for causing the death of 14-month-old Gwyneth KWEH by a rash act. She had thrust the child through an open window of a third-storey flat at Block 835 Hougang Central, hoping to pacify the crying toddler but the toddler fell to her death.
