Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Reports by two
Singapore American School students that they were the victims of
abduction attempts have led the school to warn parents to be on guard.
The private school in Woodlands, in a circular sent out to parents some
weeks ago, alerted them to a report by an 11-year-old student in
February that a woman had tried to abduct him. The boy, who was walking
home from school, said the woman had driven up in a green mini-van and
offered him a lift. When the boy declined the lift, she got out of her
car and tried to grab him.

Wednesday 10 May 2000 Deputy Prime Minister BG Lee Hsien Loong yesterday said in Parliament that banking was a service that must be paid for, just like electricity and water. We have no reason to treat bank charges any differently and have them subsidised by the government, or compel banks to provide services for free. He added that the S$2 monthly fee the bank intended to charge those with less than S$500 in their accounts "is not a big sum". Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng yesterday said in Parliament that landlords are bound by law to conduct three checks on tenants. If they fail to do so and their tenants turn out to be illegals, they risk going to jail for the mandatory minimum os six months. The Immigration Act requires a landlord to check the original immigration or workpasses of a prospective tenant, check that these particulars match those in the passport, and check with the person's employer to verify his employment. Comfort and Yellow Top taxi meters will run faster from 12 June 2000 and hailing them inside the CBD on Friday and Saturday nights will cost S$1 more. Asia Tokyo: Japanese police yesterday arrested the founder of a foot-reading cult, Hogen Fukunaga, 55, suspected of telling followers that they would get cancer unless they handed over thousands of dollars. Around the world Atlanta: Millions of Americans were digging out wallets, dusting off their lucky charms and hoping against hope as the jackpot for a popular multi-state lottery swelled to a record US$325 million (S$555.8 million). ECONOMY The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices. The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households. The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
