Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Kinokuniya, which opened Singapore's largest bookstore at Ngee
Ann City in August 1999, has revamped and enlarged its Liang Court
store.
Their new-look Liang Court Store reopened its doors a week ago. It
packs in a hefty 150 000 titles in a larger store space of 14 000
sq ft. It previously occupied only 7 000 sq ft of space.
Kinokuniya Liang Court consists of larger English & Japanese
Book Sections as well as a new Chinese Book Section. It portrays a
cosmopolitan outlook but at the same time manages to uphold its
Asian roots.
An up-to-date search system is also available at the customer
service counter. If you meet with any problems, you can always
count on Mr Atsuro Noguchi, the Store Manager, to sort things out
for you.

The Singapore Jewellers' Association (SJA) has advised tourists to

A new scheme, Supplementary Retirement Scheme, is to be introduced in January 2001. It is a voluntary programme that allows both Singaporeans and foreigners to set aside a portion of their monthly earnings in private financial institutions for investment. The workers can either withdraw their SRS savings in a lump sum or staggered over a period of 10 to 15 years. A special feature of the scheme, which will be implemented over and above the existing Central Provident Fund (CPF), is that contributions will be tax-free at free.
Reports by two Singapore American School students that they were the victims of abduction attempts have led the school to warn parents to be on guard. The private school in Woodlands, in a circular sent out to parents some weeks ago, alerted them to a report by an 11-year-old student in February that a woman had tried to abduct him. The boy, who was walking home from school, said the woman had driven up in a green mini-van and offered him a lift. When the boy declined the lift, she got out of her car and tried to grab him.

ECONOMY
The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices.
The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households.
The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
