Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Wednesday 9 Aug 2000 The economy grew by 8.8% in the first half of this year, Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong revealed yesterday in his National Day message. The Ministry of Trade and Industry has raised its growth forecast for the whole year to between 7.5 and 8.5%. "With per capita income of S$40,000 and universal home ownership, Singaporeans today are among the better off in the world. Far too many of our women remain unmarried. And Singaporeans who are married are not having big enough families to make up for those who remain single. We have not been able to solve these two grave problems." he added. Killer-litter laws are being reviewed to allow for a wider range of punishments to reflect the varying degrees of severity in the offence. This is because these degrees are not captured in the existing laws, said National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan yesterday. Now both the Penal Code and the Housing and Development Act have provisions to prosecute killer-litter offenders. However, he said, the Act offers two extremes: "You either take back the flat or issue a summons. There's nothing in between." "Between compulsory acquisition and a warning, surely you should give the HDB some options." "We want to send a strong message, yet not every case merits compulsory acquisition." "We are now re-looking the legislation to see whether we can calibrate the penalties to punish individual cases more fairly." Project Eyeball, the newest newspaper in town, will be launched on Saturday at Orchard Road with a bumper issue of more than 60 pages. About 120,000 copies of the tabloid-sized paper will be distributed free on Saturday and the following Monday to Friday. Thereafter, it will cost 80 cents a copy. Project Eyeball has an integrated print and online version. The weekend version will only be available online at eyeball.asia1.com.sg. A Bangladeshi national was charged yesterday with the murder of a fellow worker whose headless body was foundd near a worksite in Tuas on Sunday. No pleas was taken from Abdul Based Late Nasin Uddin, 34, who was arrested by the police on Monday at Tuas View Crescent. Asia Kuala Lumpur: Anwar Ibrahim was convicted of sodomy and sentenced to nine years' jail by the High Court yesterday, putting his political career in deep freeze for at least a decade, if not longer. Around the world London: All asylum seekers will lose the right to work under a new controversial plan being considered by the government in a bid to cut down the number of illegal immigrants coming to Britain. The right to work is one of the main reasons refugees target Britain. Other countries, including France, Italy, Ireland and Denmark, all refuse to let asylum seekers work.
