Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Mdm Kang's Kitchen Chilli Crabs

Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke at the Teck Ghee Constituency National Day Dinner on 5 Aug 2000. Here is the full text of his speech in English.

This year, we celebrate National Day in a confident mood. Our economy is doing well. More jobs are being created. We restored part of the cut in CPF contributions in April, and should be able to take a further step to restore
more next January. But while the economy as a whole is prospering, we still face challenges.

One cause for worry is developments in Indonesia.  Indonesia faces many difficult political and economic problems. There are serious problems in the provinces. In the Malukus, Christians are fighting Muslims. In West Papua, the indigenous people are agitating for independence. The TNI have been demoralised and discredited. The media have become very assertive, highlighting KKN
practices in the government. No foreign investments are flowing in.  More...

London: Vegetarian mothers are more likely to give birth to girls, according to research that backs the old wives' tale that what a woman eats can affect the sex of her child. The study is believed to be the first to show that cutting out meat and fish can affect the sex of a baby significantly. The Times newspaper reported yesterday. Ms Pauline Hudson, a pregnancy expert at the University of Nottingham, analysed the impact of the growing number of vegetarian women on the health of newborns. She and co-researcher Rosemary Buckley found that, while the national average in Britain was 106 boys born to every 100 girls, for vegetarian mothers, the ratio was just 85 boys to 100 girls. The survey was based on an audit of about 6,000 pregnant women in 1998, said The Times.
