Today Sunday 9 Apr 2000 In Singapore At the launch of Kindness Week at Suntec City yesterday, Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong said that grassroots organisations should get involved in the kindness movement as they were in close contact with residents. For instance, they could set up kindness clubs where members could get together, share experiences and motivate others to be kind. The People's Association marked its 40th birthday yesterday. But, its deputy chairman, Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng noted that Malay participation in its activities had been low. A Briton who allegedly assaulted two men in a road-rage case in Pasir Panjang nearly two years ago was cleared yesterday. Mr Mark Wheeler, a permanent resident here, had been charged with punching and kicking Mr Koh Tiu Ling, 46, several times. It was expert medical testimony that helped to secure Mr Wheeler's acquittal. When the Children and Young Persons Act is amended later this year, parents of juvenile delinquents will have to participate in some rehabilitation programmes with their children. They will also have to attend workshops where they will learn how to discipline their children and help them to reintegrate into society when they leave the institutions. Asia Sydney: Police hunting the rapist of a 91-year-old woman began conducting DNA tests yesterday on the entire adult male population of a small rural town. Villagers were free to refuse the test. Around the world Washington: US Attorney General Janet Reno has ordered that the Miami family holding Elian Gonzalez turn him over to his father this week, setting the stage for a showdown with Miami relatives in the bitter custody battle over the six-year-old Cuban boy.
