From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Sunday 6 Aug 2000 The Central Narcotics Bureau found Ecstasy tablets in re-sealed Panadol strips in Panadol cartons during a major drug haul at a Newton Road hotel on Friday. CNB deputy director Muhammad Azni Sarbini said the seizure of cannibis, Ice, Ecstasy, Ketamine, Erimin and Dormicum was worth more than S$100,000. It was the second largest haul of synthetic and psychotropic drugs this year. A lorry driver was yesterday jailed for eight months for dumping waste illegally, becoming the first person here to go behind bars for the offence. Lim Seng Huat, 36, was accused of dumping waste, construction debris and documents on five occasions between 22 Jun and 19 Nov last year. Ten pieces of wood, two Chinese lanterns, some broken pieces of tiles and two orange peels came flying out of a 21st-storey HDB flat on Friday.
