Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

The Central Narcotics Bureau found Ecstasy tablets in re-sealed Panadol strips in Panadol cartons during a major drug haul at a Newton Road hotel on Friday. CNB deputy director Muhammad Azni Sarbini said the seizure of cannibis, Ice, Ecstasy, Ketamine, Erimin and Dormicum was worth more than S$100,000. It was the second largest haul of synthetic and psychotropic drugs this year.

A lorry driver was yesterday jailed for eight months for dumping waste illegally, becoming the first person here to go behind bars for the offence. Lim Seng Huat, 36, was accused of dumping waste, construction debris and documents on five occasions between 22 Jun and 19 Nov last year.

Ten pieces of wood, two Chinese lanterns, some broken pieces of tiles and two orange peels came flying out of a 21st-storey HDB flat on Friday. Seah Kim Guan, 50, was charged in a magistrate's court yesterday. He allegedly threw the items out of his living room in Block 226, Jurong East Street 21, at about 9.30am that day. He is being remanded at the Institute of Mental Health until his case is mentioned again on 25 Aug 2000.

Water here is safe enough to drink straight from the tap, despite a woman getting an eye infection from bacteria-infected water. The case of a former Marsiling Apartments resident who suffered an eye infection after coming into contact with bacteria-tainted water was a rare one. The Public Utilities Board (PUB) said that town councils and managers follow strict rules to ensure that water tanks and storage pumps are kept clean in private apartments and HDB estates

Asia

Tokyo: Crimes in Japan jumped in the first half of this year, topping one million for the first time in half a century, with the number of Japanese youngsters detained for murder almost doubled in the period, police said.

 Around the world

London: Britain's Queen Mother celebrated her 100th birthday with tens of thousands of well-wishers who turned out at Buckingham Palace to salute their royal favourite.

Miami: Federal agents in the United States have broken up an alien smuggling ring that ferried indentured workers from China through the Carribean and into the United States using doctored Japanese passports, according to officials here. Six alleged smugglers were arrested on charges of conspiracy and alien smuggling, Mr James Goldman, assistant director of the US Immigration and Naturalisation Service's Miami District, said on Friday.
