Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700 000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Internet
Banking has made some inroads in Singapore. Several banks in
Singapore now provide Internet Banking Services to their
customers. DBS Bank, UOB Bank, OUB Bank and OCBC Bank already
allow their customers to log onto their bank's Internet address,
under secure keys, to obtain their account balances, look at
their transactions and pay bills.
These transactions are a
progression of the services provided by the banks' ATM network.
Eventually, more services will move online and some of these
banks may even open stand-alone Internet Banks, which are
capable of processing retail transactions currently provided by
brick & mortar bank branches.
You may not even need to
visit a bank at all for any routine banking transaction, such as
opening accounts, or clearing cheques. You just need to log on
to the Internet to carry out such transactions. Of course, you
will still get to see a bank officer, albeit on your home
screen. A click on the bank officer's picture on the screen will
activate a mechanism that rings the phone on the officer's desk
and that officer will service your banking needs in real
time.
An Internet Bank should be
able to provide all the services which a brick & mortar bank
provides, except of course, put a live bank officer in front of
you when you are on the bank's website. And all such services
provided should not require human intervention, either at input
or processing stage.
To put some perspective to what I have said - let's say
I log onto the Internet Bank's website to remit some US$ to a
friend in the United States. The Internet Bank's website
computes the exchange of the S$, in my current account with
them, to US$. It then deducts the required S$ amount, purchases
the required US$ using a spot rate and remits the money to a
correspondent bank in the United States, with instructions for
that correspondent bank to pay my friend. The Internet Bank then
issues a confirmation advice to me on the screen and I can print
it using my printer - all while I am at my PC in my study at
home. Wow! Can any bank in Singapore do that yet? If not, I
reckon, the title of Internet Bank will stay on the shelf for a
while longer.
But, it is likely that DBS
Bank will be the first Internet Bank in Singapore. Let's wait
and see.

There is no point making
political leaders take a large pay cut and "wear gunny sack"
in order to demonstrate the spirit of sacrifice, Deputy Prime Minister
Lee Hsien Loong said yesterday. If ministers' high salaries attract
opportunists, he said, it is up to voters to turn them down. But, it is
necessary to pay ministers according to their abilities and the
responsibilities of the job, he told reporters yesterday.
Manpower Minister Lee Boon
Yang will launch this year's National Courtesy Campaign tomorrow at
Golden Village Grand in Great World City. This year's slogan is
"Let's use handphones with courtesy".
Japan's debt-laden retail
chain, Sogo, is shutting down its flagship outlet at Raffles City
Shopping Centre because it has not been able to renew its lease. Its
premises will be taken over by retailers, Robinsons and Jasons Market
Place, by the second quarter of next year.
A teenage mother who was
described as mildly retarded was jailed five years yesterday for
seriously hurting her two-year-old daughter who died eight days after
being hit on the head with a rice pot. Rosnani Ismail, 19, had
originally been charged with killing Norkamariah Mohamed Rozi, but her
charge was reduced as she had low IQ and was not fully responsible for
her actions.
Asia
Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian
authorities yesterday identified the gang of heavily-armed men holed up
in the Perak jungle as members of a deviationist Islamic group with
political motives and gave them an ultimatum: surrender or expect the
worst.

ECONOMY Consumer prices fell by 0.4%
in Jun 2000, as lower costs of transport, communications and clothing
more than offset rises in housing, health and education and stationery. The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000
dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due
mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of
transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices. The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by
measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased
commonly by most households. The Government has forecast that inflation will
be within 2% this year. |
