Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Minister for Information and the Arts Lee Yock Suan yesterday announced that Singapore's media industry is to be liberalised. To begin with, Singapore Press Holdings, which now publishes 10 newspapers in 4 languages, will be able to cross over into television and radio. The Media Corporation of Singapore, which owns the local TV and most of the local radio channels, will get a newspaper licence. SPH will be able to operate up to two free-to-air television channels and run one or two radio stations. There will also be a review on the ban on satellite dishes.

Asia

Jakarta: People in Bengkulu Province in Sumatra yesterday were forced to camp out in makeshift tents as hospitals treated their patients in the aftermath of a massive earthquake that left at least 58 people dead and almost 500 injured.

Canberra: Armed rebels in the Solomon Islands seized control of the nation's capital and put Prime Minister Bartholomew Ulufa'alu under house arrest.

Around the world

Moscow: In a wide-ranging historic speech to Russian lawmakers here yesterday, President Clinton said he wanted to see a strong and prosperous Russia and urged it to join the World Trade Organisation. He is the first US president to address both  lower and upper houses of the Russian parliament.

ECONOMY

The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices.

The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households.

The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
