Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

  Hi everyone

Bak Chang or Dumpling Festival is tomorrow. All Chinese around the world celebrate this festival by wrapping dumplings filled with glutinous rice, and other fillings. You will see these dumplings hanging in their kitchens, just like those on the left.

Nonya dumplings come with minced pork and chestnut. The usual Bak Chang has cubes of pork with some fat still attached, and chestnut. Vegetarians wrap Kee Chang, which is dumpling filled with glutinous rice coloured yellow by a substance called Kee. Nonya and the usual pork dumpling is taken steamy hot. Some people like to dab a little dark soya sauce on it. Kee Chang is usually taken with a dabbing of table sugar.

For the last few days, Chinese families here in Singapore have been busy wrapping Bak Chang. However, families still in mourning, by tradition, cannot wrap Bak Chang. But, they can eat Bak Chang. These families rely on relatives, who have wrapped them, to send some over to them for them to eat. Even in eating, these bereaved families cannot reheat the Bak Chang, which are wrapped in the leaves. They must remove the leaf-wrappings and steam the Bak Chang. That's the custom.

Over the next few days, stalls around the island selling dianxin/kueh (delicacies taken at teabreak) will be closed as many Singaporeans will be eating Bak Chang all through the next few days.

 Monday 5 June 2000

Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong arrived in Sydney yesterday, at the start of a six-day visit to Australia during which he will meet key government figures, including Prime Minister John Howard, financial  officials and business leaders.

Three men confronted a man in Bukit Batok Central on Saturday night for staring at them. One of the men produced a knife from his back pocket. The man they bullied turned out to be a plainclothes policeman on duty. When the policeman identified himself and drew his revolver, the three men ran off. Through enquiries at the scene, the police managed to arrest one of the three men at his Bukit Batok home yesterday. A second man was arrested shortly afterwards. The third man is still at large, but the police know who he is.

Asia

Manila: Philippines authorities yesterday announced the deployment of policemen in universities and schools along with tightened security at Manila's international airport to prevent terrorist attacks in the wake of bombings yesterday, after a two week lull.

Sydney: The Reserve Bank of Australia will drop Britain's Queen Elizabeth II's image from its S$5 bank note next year as the country marks the centenary of its federation, Sidney's Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported. Sir Henry Parkes, a 19th century British immigrant and bankrupt who helped steer Australia's states towards federation in 1901, will replace the queen on the bill.

Around the world

Washington: The US Food & Drug Administration approved TNKase, a fast clot-busting drug for heart attack victims. It can be administered in five seconds, compared to 90 minutes by a similar therapy on the market, the product's manufacturer Genentech Company has said.

New York: The 1.2 million college graduates in America's class of 2000 are entering an unusually strong job market that is a result of a flourishing economy and, especially, the boom in high technology.

ECONOMY

The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices.

The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households.

The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
