Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Monday with the Editor

Hallo everyone
We are now in the early
part of December 2000. All too soon, we will cross the
threshold of the old millennium proper and begin life
in the 21st century. But, not all of us will make it
across into the new millennium.
|
But, that is life! However,
the majority of us owe it to ourselves, as well as our
loved ones, to make doubly sure that we do not do anything
silly, such as getting ourselves involved in drink-driving
this Christmas season. I say, by all means be jolly
and have fun, for 'tis the season to have fun. But play
it safe so that we will not be sorry. If we drink, don't
drive, and if we drive, don't drink. Just hail a taxi
or get some sober friends to drive us home. |
I, for one, have no
need to worry about this problem because I don't have
a car. Ha! Ha! I still need to exercise due care when
crossing the roads - I never know when things may go
wrong. I may be careful, but that doesn't mean there
won't be any drunk drivers cruising around in his/her
vehicle. Do have fun, but be smart.
