Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Ex-convicts can now apply for jobs in the civil service. Breaking away from age-old prejudice, the Public Service Division said that since August, all 14 ministries had been allowed to hire people with criminal records, if they met job requirements. According to the Prisons Department, there are currently 13,401 Singaporeans and permanent residents in its custody in jails and in other detention centres. No figure is available on the pool of ex-convicts, but estimates indicate there are over 100,000 of them.
The contagious foot, hand and mouth disease has landed 19 children in hospital, with the total number of cases reported since 12 Sep 2000 rising to 363 as of yesterday.
A policeman died from a gunshot wound to his head on Sunday, minutes after he was found lying on the ground at the entrance to an armoury. Corporal LEE Yeow Piang, 28, was single and joined the Singapore Police Force in 1996. The case, classified as unnatural death, is being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department.
A schoolboy admitted in the Juvenile Court yesterday to biting the breast of his maid and punching her on the mouth. The 14-year-old, a student at Woodlands Secondary School, also admitted he had used a belt, chair and drumstick to hit the maid - on her shoulder, nose, ear and head. He faced six charges of causing hurt voluntarily to Miss Minari Shahidan, 26, at his family's home in Woodlands Drive 16.
