Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Fountain of Wealth at Suntec: World's Largest
|

The Fountain of Wealth at
Suntec City is the world's largest fountain. It has a base
area of 1683 sq metres and from this base area projects a huge
85-tonne (85,000kg) bronze frame resembling a tripod but with
four legs. Water from the fountain shoots up to 30 metres high.
Also, from the huge ring at the top of the structure, sprays of
water sluice the fountain base. Whether you take in this sight
from the basement of Suntec City where the fountain base is
located or from the main road above where the Fountain of Wealth
towers over, you can be sure it's a sight to behold. Three times every
day, you get a chance to go up real close to the fountain when
it is turned off - from 9am - 11am, 2.30pm - 6pm and 7pm -
7.45pm - just so that visitors to it can partake in a ritual,
which is the walk round the fountain. It is said that walking
round the fountain and touching its water brings good luck to
the person carrying out the ritual. Try it next time you hop by
Suntec City - it's a spiritual experience you'll never forget. You can also make
song and laser message dedications free of charge. The song
dedication service is available from 7pm - 10pm every day while
the laser message dedications, featuring multi-media laser shows
on the 360º rotating water screen, are available on weekends
and public holidays.
Members of
organised tour groups to the Fountain of Wealth get to receive a
commemorative certificate documenting the visit. Don't miss a
visit to the fountain or you'll regret it. Click SuntecCity to visit
their website.

All childcare centres and
kindergartens will have to close for at least a week from tomorrow, following
the deaths of two more children yesterday, possibly from hand, foot and
mouth disease. A 14-month-old girl and her 2½-year-old brother died.
This brings to four the number of deaths reported last month of children
who all showed the same symptoms: fever, vomiting and rashes. The
closure will affect about 140,000 children in 557 childcare centres and
440 kindergartens. From today, all doctors are required to report any
case with symptoms resembling those of hand, foot and mouth disease to
the Environment Ministry. Mr LIM Swee Say takes over as acting Minister for the
Environment with effect from today. Mr LEE Yock Suan who has been
concurrently holding this portfolio with the Information And The Arts
portfolio continues as the Minister for Arts And Information.
The new law requiring homeowners
to replace all wooden brackets with stainless-steel brackets for air-
conditioners mounted in wall openings or windows in all buildings
except landed homes comes into effect today. Homeowners who have not yet
replaced such wooden brackets face a fine of up to S$5000 and up to six
months in jail.
Asia
Jakarta: Lawyers
representing the youngest son of former President Suharto yesterday said
they would appeal for a delay in their client's 18-month sentence for
corruption.
Bangkok: Thai police want
the government to revoke visa-free entry privileges for citizens of some
countries to prevent transnational criminals from entering Thailand, the
Bangkok Post reported yesterday. The proposal was made during Friday's
meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) chaired by Prime Minister
Chuan Leekpai, it said.
Around the world
London: A murderer who
sexually assaulted and killed a woman 23 years ago was identified
through a technique known as SGM profiling which builds a genetic
"fingerprint" from old, degraded samples. Ian LOWTHER, 43, a
van driver, quickly confessed when detectives - who had taken mouth
swabs from 3000 men living around Shipley, West Yorkshire, the murder
scene - went to his home and confronted him with the evidence.
Rome: Top Italian television
executives have been forced to resign after state TV aired graphic
images in a prime-time news report on pornography. State television's
RAI Tre station showed some photos and graphic snippets of children
being tortured and killed during the 7pm newscast on 27 Sep 2000. The
broadcast, seen by 11 million people, shocked Italy and has ignited a
political firestorm.
