Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

A three-year study on the Singapore Family, commissioned by the Ministry of Community Development & Sports, was completed last year. A total of 2700 persons were interviewed by a team led by Dr Stella Quah, Associate Professor, Dept of Sociology, National University of Singapore.

  Here are the findings:

  1. Families in Singapore are strong.

  2. Role of wife as nurturer & husband as provider continues to be prevalent.

  3. More parents are moving away from physical punishment in disciplining the child.

  4. Most parents are satisfied with the time spent on children.

  5. Majority of parents do not feel distressed.

  The other findings are:

* Majority in dual-income families agree domestic tasks are the primary responsibility of the wife but also feel wife's career is important.

* Majority agree on the child's filial obligation to support and look after the aged parents.

* Majority of parents prefer to encourage their children to talk about problems, be curious, explore and question.

* 20% wish they have more time to spend with the children.

* Some parents find that grandparents can help in coping with work and family.

Data compiled by the Department of Statistics has shown that household income of the bottom 10% of the population had plummeted to an average of S$133 a month last year, down from S$258 in 1998 and S$370 in 1990. The number of households with monthly income of less than S$3000 increased to 42%, up from 40% in 1998. In contrast, households in the top 20% earned 18 times more than those in the bottom 20%. The ratio was 15 in 1998.

ECONOMY

The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices.

The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households.

The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
