Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Sunday 30 July 2000

The Seventh Month in the Lunar Calendar, popularly known as the Hungry Ghosts Festival, starts tomorrow.

The Singapore Management University (SMU) marked its beginning with an inaugural opening convocation at Bras Basah Park yesterday. It is the first university in the city, first government-funded but privately-managed university, and first university to be devoted to business. SMU's campus is set in the historic Bras Basah area, a place which housed some of the oldest schools in Singapore, such as Raffles Girls' School, St Joseph's Institution and Raffles Institution.

The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) will introduce new software to provide automatic tax deduction for donations from 1 Jan 2000. With automatic deductions, all a taxpayer has to do is to provide his identity-card number when making a donation, and the deduction will be made automatically in the following assessment year. The service will come into effect in the 2002 assessment year.

A Primary 3 pupil is lying unconscious in an intensive care ward after he was hit by a car while crossing Punggol Road on Friday. Lee Xiong Ming, 9, was on his way to a tuition class when the accident happened at the traffic light junction between Punggol Road and Rivervale Walk at about 2.20pm. He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Asia

Beijing: Director Zhang Yimou last Wednesday selected Ms Dong Jie from 40,000 applicants to be his leading lady in his new movie, Happy Times, according to the Beijing Youth Daily.

Hongkong: Taiwanese actor Nicky Wu Chi-lung narrowly escaped death recently when he was nearly knocked down by a car during the making of a new movie. Oriental Daily News reported that during the take, Wu had been performing his own stunts.

Hongkong: Leading Hongkong Internet company Tom.com has fired 80 staff in a further blow to the territory's beleaguered cyber-sector. Tom.com, owned by Hongkong billionaire Li Ka Shing, announced the job cuts on Friday after revealing losses of US$5.8 million (S$10 million) for the first three months of the year to March.

 Around the world

Charlotte, USA: Bank of America, the biggest American bank, said that it will fire as many as 10,000 workers to cut costs after chairman and chief executive Hugh McColl Jr's strategy of building through acquisitions failed to deliver the earnings growth he anticipated. By firing up to 6.7% of its staff, mostly in middle and upper management, the bank will save US$550 million (S$951 million) to US$600 million a year, it said.

London: Speeding British motorists face a huge increase in their chances of being caught as police forces are now allowed to keep the proceeds from driving fines. According to an Electronic Telegraph report yesterday, the number of drivers trapped under a pilot scheme in one area has soared from 10 to 200 a day, and now ministers are planning to allow all forces to keep the money from speeding fines, which normally would be handed to the Treasury.
