Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Six-million-dollar Snowcity will open in Singapore beside the Singapore Science Centre. in Jurong on 4 June 2000, just in time for the school holidays, which has started.

The idea is novel and Snowcity will draw in the crowd by the thousands. But, the novelty may wear off in a few years' time. That will be when the owners will think of new ideas to rejuvenate the place. In the meantime, Snowcity is expected to be a big attraction, both for Singapore residents and people living in the neighbouring countries.

Admission fee is S$12 (adult), S$7 (child under 7), & S$35 (Family package:2 adults + 2 children) during the promotional period. Only 100 to 150 people can enter Snowcity during any one of its eight show-times daily. Each show-time lasts slightly over an hour.

Snowcity is open from Tuesdays to Thursdays, and on Sundays from 10am - 9pm. On Fridays, Saturdays, and eves of public holidays, it is opened from 10am - 10pm. It is closed on Mondays.

How to get there: Take the MRT to Jurong East MRT Station and walk or seven minutes or take a bus (service Nos. 66, 178, 198 & 335). Address: 321 Jurong Town Hall Road, Snow City Building Singapore.  Telephone: (65) 560 0179.

Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong has urged both the public and private sectors to adopt family-friendly practices. The signs are there that the family is weakening - rising numbers of singles, divorces and single parents. His concern is that the balance between work and family is tilting away from the family.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) yesterday said that most of the 12 foreign spouses who have been repatriated because they have the Aids virus will be allowed to return if they wish. Deputy Secretary Tan Boon Huat also said that the Ministry would be sympathetic when considering appeals concerning HIV-infected foreign spouses whose social-visit passes are running out.

There will be no five-day week for the civil service, the Prime Minister said yesterday. He explained that such a decision could have far-reaching consequences on the economy and he did not want to risk an irrevocable mistake.

ECONOMY

The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices.

The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households.

The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
