Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Saturday 22 July 2000 Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew has urged Singaporeans to change their mindsets and become more daring and innovative in order to compete in a new world swept by changes in information and technology. In an article he wrote for a special issue of the July 24 edition of Newsweek, he added that there was no need to abandon our core values while our society adapts to the sweeping changes brought on by the digital age. The police, working with New Zealand and Malaysian counterparts, smashed an international stolen car syndicate in a three-day blitz which began on Tuesday. The syndicate stole luxury cars, smuggled them into Singapore and gave them a makeover. The cars were then passed off as new and shipped to New Zealand, Australia and Indonesia, along with forged shipping documents and log books. Three of the gang members - two Singaporean businessmen, aged 45 and 36, and an Indonesian, 32, were arrested here. The other two were arrested in Auckland on Tuesday by the New Zealand police. S-League footballers Ivica Raguz and Max Nicholson of Woodlands Wellington were attacked by a man wielding a hockey stick outside their Yishun condominium last night. Raguz was hit on his left knee and taken to hospital while Nicholson, who was chased down the road, escaped unhurt. Two more secondary schools will go autonomous next year. They are Dunman Secondary in Tampines and Xinmin Secondary in Hougang. Education Minister Teo Chee Hean announced this when he visited Xinmin Secondary yesterday. Autonomous schools not only get more say in the way they are run but also receive more annual funds - a grant of S$300 a student a year. There are now 18 autonomous schools here under the scheme, which began in 1994 with six schools. Five popular schools - Catholic High, De La Salle, Methodist Girls' Primary, Pei Chun Public and Tao Nan - will ballot applications in Phase 2B of Primary 1 registration. Registration for Phase 2B began on Thursday and ended yesterday. Asia Jakarta: President Abdurrahman Wahid softened his stance towards Parliament yesterday by issuing an apology for the political row following his decision to dismiss two ministers in April. Beijing: Hongkong pop star Aaron Kwok has suffered a chestbone fracture in a stunt which went badly wrong in the middle of an action-movie shoot in Shanghai. Around the world Berlin: German and Italian police have uncovered an Albanian- Mafia racket shipping pregnant prostitutes to Germany, where their children are born and sold for up to GBP 20,000 (S$51,900) each.
