The Glass Menagerie by
Pulitzer Prize winning writer Tennessee Williams |
|
19 - 28 May 2006 |
|
|
We are very proud to present, as part of I
Theatre¡¯s Imago series, The Glass Menagerie. This powerful classic is
considered one of Tennessee Williams¡¯ finest plays. |
|
Hailed by critics as a ¡®Perennial
Masterpiece,¡¯ The Glass Menagerie is 20th century playwriting at its
finest; skilfully interweaving the tension of a crumbling family unit
with the arresting power of dreams. |
|
Originally set in the turmoil of Depression
Era America; I Theatre vividly re-colours the story to focus on a
troubled Eurasian family living in Post War Singapore. |
|
The story revolves around Tom, a frustrated
warehouse labourer who writes poetry on shoebox lids and dreams of
travelling the world (Timothy Nga). He tells the story of life with his
dramatic mother Amanda (Christina Sergeant) and crippled, painfully shy
sister Laura (Emily Oehlers). |
|
Amanda desperately holds onto the manners of
her privileged past, protesting as Tom fights against his family
responsibilities by getting drunk ¡®at the movies.¡¯ Meanwhile, Laura
spends her days tending to her collection of glass animals in their
rundown apartment, trying to ignore the terror of the world outside. |
|
When Amanda encourages Tom to set Laura up
with a suitable young man from the warehouse (Paul Hannon), unresolved
tensions are forced to the surface, leading to an emotionally charged
and unforgettable climax. |
|
Don¡¯t miss I Theatre¡¯s production of The
Glass Menagerie. With a strong cast of talented local and international
actors, it¡¯s the ideal chance to experience this powerful classic! |
