Police Clamp Down on Illegal
Employment of Masseuses |
|
Police checked 129 massage establishments in
the HDB heartlands in a three-day, island-wide operations that started
on 30 June 2006 and continued over the weekend. |
A total of 77 foreigners, comprising PRCs,
Malaysians and Thais, were arrested for offences under the Immigration
Act or the Employment of Foreign Workers Act. |
Thirty seven establishments were found to
have illegally engaged these foreigners to work as masseuses and were
issued summons for the offence of operating a massage establishment
without a valid licence. |
With the recent changes for exempted massage
establishments, operators of the remaining 92 establishments were
advised to remove curtains and partitions that obstructed their shops
from public view. They were also reminded to register their businesses
with the Police Licensing Division before 26 August 2006. |
For a massage establishment to qualify for
exemption, the area where massage services are carried out must be
visible from outside the premises as well as to other customers within
the premises. Cubicles or partitions that allow the massage services to
be carried out in private are not allowed. |
In addition, only Singapore citizens,
permanent residents of Singapore, or Malaysians with valid work permits
can be employed. |
Deputy Director Operations, DAC Raymond Yeo,
said: "Police will continue our enforcement checks on massage
establishments. These are aimed at ensuring that the establishments are
either operating with a valid license or qualify for exemption under the
law. We will not hesitate to take tough enforcement action against
errant operators. Bona fide establishments are urged to take measures to
comply with the exemption conditions as well as to register their
business before 26 Aug 2006." |
