NAFA receives largest single donation of artworks
from Cultural Medallion artist Lim Tze Peng |
¡¡ |
|
The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) is
proud to be the recipient of 45 Chinese ink and colour works by
celebrated local artist and Cultural Medallion winner, Lim Tze Peng
(ÁÖ×Óƽ). |
This donation is by far the largest single
contribution of a group of works by an artist to the Academy¡¯s permanent
art collection. |
The paintings will be displayed at Tze Peng
in Paris, an exhibition to be held from 15 ¨C 23 June 2006 at NAFA
Galleries 1 & 2. |
Among the works are depictions of iconic
landmarks such as the red windmill above the Moulin Rouge, the Arc de
Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower, as well as quintessential Parisian scenes
¨C of side streets and caf¨¦s, the various views from the Seine River, and
selected façades of the generic houses of Paris. |
Says Ms Bridget Tracy Tan, NAFA¡¯s Director
(Gallery & Theatre): ¡°The rich colour and precise marks from Tze Peng¡¯s
brush compare admirably with the fleeting and talented paint strokes of
the Impressionists. Tze Peng¡¯s buildup however, does not create merely
impressions, but produces a cross between plain, agile drawing and the
contouring textures of painting.¡± |
All the works were produced on-site during
the 82-year-old painter¡¯s two-month visit to the French capital city in
2000, where he stayed at the Cit¨¦ Internationale des Arts
(¡°International City of Arts¡±), occupying one of two apartments
belonging to NAFA. These apartments were acquired by the Academy in the
late 1990s to be used as studios by artists, particularly NAFA alumni,
lecturers, students or artists who have made contributions to NAFA.
(Please refer to ANNEX for more info.) |
Mr Choo Thiam Siew, President of NAFA,
describes Lim¡¯s donation as ¡°a homecoming of sorts, from the master
painter to his potential erudite, in a learning environment such as NAFA.¡± |
He adds: ¡°In 2003, Lim Tze Peng was
conferred the Cultural Medallion by the Singapore government. His
contributions to the arts and culture in Singapore go beyond simply
being a practitioner. Through his art, he has not only demonstrated
talent but both strength and dedication. It is an exemplariness that all
students of art and life can all benefit from.¡± |
