The Singapore Armed Forces, the United
States Navy (USN), and the United States Coast Guard are participating
in the annual Singapore-US Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training
(CARAT) exercise from 30 May to 13 June 2006. |
Started in 1995, CARAT aims to enhance
interoperability and professional cooperation between the two armed
forces through mutually beneficial training exercises. |
The twelfth in its series, Ex CARAT 2006
will involve land, sea and air elements from the two armed forces,
totalling more than 1500 personnel, 11 ships, a submarine, and fixed and
rotary wing aircraft. |
Ex CARAT 2006 will focus on conventional
maritime warfare competencies, such as anti-air warfare, anti-surface
warfare, anti-submarine warfare and maritime air operations. This year¨s
exercise will also feature both countries' warships in challenging
maritime security serials. |
|
Highlights of Ex CARAT 2006 include the
Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) firing of Barak missiles against
drone targets in a combined anti-missile and anti-aircraft scenario, and
the use of the USN's CENTRIX and the RSN's ACCESS command and control
(C2) systems. |
These C2 systems allow the navies to
exercise real-time control over all participating units, thereby
increasing exercise realism and enhancing interoperability. The exercise
participants will also take part in a joint community project at the
MINDSVille Home for the intellectually disabled. |
The opening ceremony this morning was
co-officiated by the RSN's Fleet Commander Colonel Tan Kai Hoe and the
USN's Commander Logistics Group Western Pacific Rear-Admiral William R.
Burke. |

followed by the firing of BARAK missiles in a combined anti-missile
and anti-aircraft scenario, where the RSN Missile Corvette engaged
two drone targets simultaneously. All targets were successfully
destroyed. |
2nd Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen
witnessed the successful conduct of the combined missile and gun
firing. |
This firing exercise represented the
RSN's enhanced operational readiness and demonstrated the high level
of inter-operability between the two navies. |
