Singapore Food Festival 2005 To
Celebrate Evolution Of Uniquely Singapore Cuisine And Flavours |
1 - 31 JULY 2005 |
|
Twelve years on, and the Singapore Food Festival (SFF)
continues to be an exciting event to look out for on the Asian food calendar. |
From the 10 events held at the inaugural SFF in
1994, the SFF has grown in strength and stature, to the 38 events supported by
32 partners that will be held this July at more than 30 venues islandwide. |
Singaporeans, with their renowned passion for food
as well as food lovers from overseas, can look forward to a month-long
feasting of the best of Uniquely Singapore cuisine at a wide range of exciting
food-inspired events ranging from food trails, cook-outs, culinary workshops
to themed banquets and competitions. |
This year¡¯s SFF celebrates Singapore¡¯s food
heritage with a look at the early years of independence, when Singapore was a
fledgling nation with the many diverse cultures and cuisines of its immigrant
populace, to the steady maturing of the nation, when regional and global
influences crept into the lifestyle and cuisine choices of Singaporeans today. |
This will be showcased during the Opening Ceremony
on 1st July 2005 at Parco Bugis Junction where visitors can get to savour the
traditional hawker fare such as shaved ice-balls and rickshaw noodles found in
Singapore of the 60s. |
Singaporeans can take a walk down memory lane and
make themselves comfortable on the wooden tables and chairs under canvas
shelters and strings of motley ¡®ping pong¡¯ light bulbs, while hawkers in
singlet and shorts cook up a storm behind their pushcart food stalls. |
¡°Singaporeans love our Singapore food. Over the
years, the traditional ¡°must-try¡± Singapore dishes like Chicken Rice, Chilli
Crab and Laksa have gained a strong following amongst the locals and visitors
to our shores. Singapore Food Festival offers us the platform to invite our
overseas friends and relatives for a sumptuous meal of local treats while
offering them an opportunity to discover our food centres that make dining in
Singapore such a unique experience,¡± said Ms Margaret Teo, Director, Food &
Beverage, Singapore Tourism Board. |
This year¡¯s Singapore Food Festival will see new
events as well as familiar favourites, reflecting the unique and diverse ways
food is enjoyed in Singapore. |
Visitors and locals alike can look forward to
feasting on Singapore¡¯s diverse local delights at new core events including
the Deep Sea Medley, where fresh seafood, long an accepted aspect of Singapore
food, is celebrated; Sips and Bites Delight where visitors can get to eat like
the locals by pairing the wide range of beverages such as teh tarik (pulled
tea) or beer, with local favourites such as otak otak; the Vegetarian and
Fruits Jamboree which showcases the current movement towards wellness and
healthy eating in Singapore; and FoodVenture for Kids, which aims to educate
and influence children on their food choices through fun activities and
entertaining performances. |
For the second year running, every visitor into
Singapore in July 2005 will receive a free Singapore Chilli Crab treat,
compliments of the Singapore Tourism Board. The redemption voucher is
available during Singapore Food Festival (1 to 31 July 05) at the Singapore
Visitors¡¯ Centres and redeemable at 5 participating established restaurants
islandwide. |
The evolution of Singapore cuisine continues at
SFF05 New Dish Creation Competition, where new dishes have been created to
suit the modern Singaporean palate. Each inspirational creation is a tribute
to past tradition and a preview of tastes to come. |
Three new categories namely Seafood, Healthy
Cuisine and Healthy Ethnic cuisine were added this year. The Seafood category
is to highlight the large variety of Seafood available as well as the
popularity of Seafood dishes amongst tourists and locals whilst the two new
healthy cuisines categories, have been added to promote the latest awareness
and trend in healthy eating. |
Also returning for the second year is last year¡¯s
successful Merchant Promotion Program where overseas visitors and the public
can enjoy dining privileges from 200 food and beverage establishments
throughout July 2005. UOB card members can look out additional discounts and
privileges. |
Premium ice cream Haagen Dazs will also mark the
occasion with superb ice cream creations to tempt the sweet-toothed ¨C watch
out for the sumptuous Durian Divine and the ¡®ice kachang¡¯-inspired Singapura
Ice. |
Homegrown supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice will
also be organising ¡°Uniquely Singaporean Home-cooking¡± demonstrations
throughout July 2005 to demonstrate simple, quick-to-prepare yet healthy and
tasty Singapore dishes. |
Other new and exciting activities organised in
conjunction with Singapore Food Festival are: Konica Minolta Family Dining
Photo Contest, 2+2 Healthy Cooking Competition, just to name a few. |
¡°We are fortunate to have the support of so many
partners this year,¡± said Mr Ed Ng, President of Reed Exhibitions, co-organiser
of the Singapore Food Festival 2005. ¡°From UOB, returning for the 2nd time as
the presenter for SFF, through to NTUC FairPrice, Konica Minolta, Haagen Dazs
and CityGas, we have enjoyed working with people who are just as passionate
about food as we are, and we look forward to working with them in the coming
years.¡± |
Indeed, the Singapore Food Festival has come a
long way since its inception. Like Singapore cuisine, it has grown and evolved
into a reflection and a study of Singapore past, present and future. |
