THE SEARCH FOR THE GREATEST
BARGAIN-HUNTERS AT THE UPCOMING GREAT SINGAPORE SALE HAS STARTED |
|
Are you game enough to participate
in the ultimate shopping challenge of the year? |
|
|
The search for the greatest bargain-hunters at the
upcoming Great Singapore Sale (GSS) kicks off with an invitation to all
shoppers to take up the challenge to participate in the Great Singapore
Shopping Challenge 2005 – the main event highlight of GSS 2005 (27 May to 24
July). |
|
First held last year as a special event to
highlight the incredible savings that can be achieved at GSS, the Shopping
Challenge is a quest to search for the ultimate bargain-hunters during the
ultimate shopping season of the year! |
|
In the ultimate shopping challenge, teams of
shoppers will be put to the test and sent on a mad rush for the best bargains,
and the savviest local and tourist teams that ultimately garner the most
savings will walk away with the Singapore and international team championships
and grand prize of $6,000 worth of shopping vouchers each! |
|
Unlike last year’s Challenge which was just one
afternoon’s affair, this year’s Challenge will be bigger and better as it will
comprise a series of races which will culminate in a Grand Final with separate
categories for locals and tourists. In total, it will involve more local and
foreign participants, and cover a much longer period of GSS. |
|
Instead of just one race, local participants will
compete in a series of 5 preliminary races that will take place at 5 different
malls – Centrepoint, Wisma Atria, Millenia Walk, HarbourFront Centre and
Paragon - over the first 4 weekends of GSS. The winner of each race in the
Singapore category will face-off against each other for the Singapore team
championship and grand prize in the Grand Final, which will flag off at
Millenia Walk on 25 June – the last Saturday of the local school holidays. |
|
The call for participation for the Singapore
category has started, and all local shoppers need to do is charge $20 to their
MasterCard card at any of the five participating malls between 22 April and 22
May for a chance to participate in the Shopping Challenge. Five lucky shoppers
will be picked from each participating mall, and each shopper will have to
form a team of three to compete in the preliminary rounds for a place in the
Grand Final. |
|
What’s new this year is the introduction of a
separate category for foreign participants who will be flying in from
different countries to participate in the shopping frenzy and compete against
each other in the Shopping Challenge Grand Final for the international team
championship and grand prize of $6,000 worth of shopping vouchers as well. In
the Grand Final, the teams will have to race in not just one, but all five
malls to grab the best bargains! |
|
“The Committee’s decision to expand the scale of
the Challenge was the result of the high level of excitement among the local
and foreign teams that participated last year, the strong interest from the
foreign media who came to cover the event, and the readiness of the malls to
participate again this year,” said Dato’ Dr Jannie Tay, President of the
Singapore Retailers Association. “So once again, the Singapore Retailers
Association is pleased to support the Challenge because in many ways, it
encapsulates what the Great Singapore Sale is all about – the bargains, the
fun, the excitement and the rewards!” |
|
At the invitation of the Singapore Retailers
Association, The Association of Shopping Centres (Singapore) is organising the
Great Singapore Shopping Challenge for the second year running, in conjunction
with the Great Singapore Sale. |
|
“At the first Great Singapore Shopping Challenge
in 2004, many smart shoppers rose to the occasion and made very good
purchases, proving themselves worthy participants,” said Mr Anthony Yip, Vice
President of The Association of Shopping Centres (Singapore). “This year’s
Challenge, which spans a longer period of time, will also see more foreign
teams competing for the coveted title and top prize, and hopefully, word of
their exploits in our shopping paradise will be brought back to their home
countries.” |
|
This year’s Challenge will bring together a total
of eight tourist teams from eight countries in the Asia Pacific region, namely
Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, China, India, Taiwan and
Australia. This is an increase from six tourist teams last year. |
|
Ms Sulian Tan-Wijaya, Director, Tourism Shopping,
Singapore Tourism Board, said, “We are thrilled that the Great Singapore
Shopping Challenge, Singapore’s search for the ultimate bargain-hunters, is
back again. This exciting Challenge aptly encapsulates the fantastic value and
fun the Great Singapore Sale offers. Such a national Shopping Challenge
involving local and international participants will definitely add a lot of
vibrancy and fun to our shopping scene during the Great Singapore Sale. We
invite all shoppers to take up the challenge and join us for a great Sale-a-bration!” |
|
Each team will be given shopping money in the form
of a pre-paid card from MasterCard, the presenter of the Great Singapore
Shopping Challenge 2005, to purchase items from specific product categories.
The purchases will be theirs to keep. What’s more, the local and tourist teams
that garner the most dollar savings will be rewarded with $6,000 worth of
shopping vouchers in the Grand Final. |
|
“In our capacity as the presenter of the Shopping
Challenge and the official card of the Great Singapore Sale, we are committed
to helping teams compete more efficiently by providing them with MasterCard
pre-paid cards to pay in the fastest and most convenient way, so nothing
stands in between the teams and the best deals,” said Mr T.V. Seshadri, Vice
President & Country Manager, Singapore and Regional Account Leader, South East
Asia, MasterCard International. |
|
The Great Singapore Shopping Challenge promises to
spice up the upcoming Great Singapore Sale by putting the bargain-hunting
prowess of shoppers to the test. Are you game enough to take up the Challenge? |
