The ITE Advantage - A Global Leader
In Technical Education |
Excerpted from Statement
By Dr Law Song Seng, Director & CEO/ITE |
|
ITE develops a new strategic plan
every five years. Its first comprehensive strategic plan was the ITE 2000
Plan, which started in 1995. This plan built ITE into an established
post-secondary technical institution by year 2000. |
The second plan, the ITE Breakthrough, developed
ITE into a world-class technical education institution for the knowledge-based
economy. We successfully completed this plan in 2004. |
Today (2 Feb 2005), we are pleased to announce our
third strategic plan for the next five years. We call this new plan the ITE
Advantage. |
ITE Advantage – The Next Phase of Continuous
Transformation |
ITE has achieved a significant transformation as a
post-secondary technical institution since its establishment in 1992. |
Today, ITE is a world-class post-secondary
technical education institution. We have created a unique brand of an ITE
Education that is not only attractive to school leavers and adult learners,
but also well recognised locally and overseas for its relevance, quality and
values. |
With ITE Breakthrough, ITE has succeeded in
producing knowledgeable, well-trained, active, confident and active graduates
for the knowledge economy. Moving ahead, ITE faces new challenges in the
ever-changing global, social and economic environment. |
To take ITE beyond being a world-class education
institution, the new ITE Advantage Plan was formulated with the vision of “A
Global Leader in Technical Education”. |
We choose to call this new Plan, the “ITE
Advantage” for two good reasons. Firstly, it reflects our aspiration to
establish ourselves as a global leader by taking advantage of the new
opportunities presented by the dynamic changes in the global environment. |
Secondly, the intent is to further build on the
ITE Brand of College Education by creating additional competitive advantages
for our students, staff, employers and other stakeholders. |
Our New Vision – A Global Leader in Technical
Education |
ITE’s new vision projects our aspiration to be a
global leader, internationally recognised among peers for its leadership,
innovation, quality programmes, “best-in-class” practices and organisational
excellence. |
To stay relevant and responsive in the next phase
of its transformation, ITE must be more actively engaged with the changes
rapidly taking place in technical vocational training overseas. |
As a global leader, there will be greater
involvement in collaborating, sharing and making available, our capability,
experience and ITE qualifications to the wider regional and international
community. |
However, while we have injected a greater global
perspective in the ITE Advantage, our core mission and primary function will
continue to focus on helping Singapore develop a highly-skilled and adaptable
workforce. |
Four Goals of Strategic Focus |
The ITE Advantage plan comprises a new vision,
four Goals, nine Strategies and 19 Programmes. The plan was formulated after
an extensive process of consultation with ITE’s customers and stakeholders
over a period of nine months last year. The four goals are: |
Goal One – An ITE Education for a Global
Economy |
Under Goal One, ITE will prepare and orientate its
students to the new realities and challenges of the increasingly competitive
global environment. |
We will provide ‘Real Education’ to bring out the
best in every student. We will do this by providing greater flexibility to
customise learning to the needs of the individual through programmes such as a
flexible selection system, flexible curriculum framework and differentiated
learning. |
We will use entrance tests, interviews and
portfolio assessments, which look beyond the GCE ‘O’ and ‘N’ level grades of
the applicants. |
We will also give our three ITE Colleges greater
autonomy to deliver their courses so as to provide greater differentiation in
teaching and learning while maintaining the quality and consistency of
standards under the “One ITE, Three Colleges” System. |
Students with diverse interests and aptitude will
have greater options to elect for advanced-standing credit modules at the
Polytechnics or ITE. Others can choose to do inter-disciplinary modules at
another School within the same College. |
Beyond these, ITE aims to orientate our students
towards a global mindset by exposing them to global trends and developments in
the workplace, industry and overseas countries. |
This will be done through seminars, workshops,
industry attachments, overseas assignment programmes and student exchange
programmes. |
Students will also have the opportunity to develop
their entrepreneurial skills through both formal and informal entrepreneurship
programmes and activities. There will be leadership development programmes to
groom potential ITE leaders for the workplace and community. |
