Smaller class size for Primary
One and Partial Single Session
From 2005, MOE will reduce the
Primary One class size from the current 40 to 30 in all government schools.
Concurrently, MOE will also begin
transiting schools towards partial single session over the next 10 years,
where the Primary Three to Primary Six classes will be in one session while
the Primary One and Primary Two classes will be in the other session. These
changes were announced at the Committee of Supply debate in March 2003.
The smaller class sizes for
Primary One will ensure that younger students, who need more assistance, can
get more individualised attention and supervision from teachers.
The partial single session which
will be gradually implemented over the next 10 years will eventually allow
Primary Three to Primary Six students to benefit from the additional freed-up
school facilities for enrichment programmes and CCA .
These initiatives will mean some
reduction in Primary One places in certain primary schools. This reduction
will be phased in gradually to give schools ample time to adjust to the
changes.
However, there will be sufficient
school places for all eligible P1 students in each planning area and across
the entire primary school system. No child who is eligible for P1 will be
denied a place in school.
