This month marks an exciting event
in Singapore’s art calendar as SingArt – A Brush with Lions, a big, bold
and vibrant street art exhibition makes its way to the streets of Singapore.
|
|
SingArt – A Brush with Lions,
presented by Caltex and Raffles Hotel and supported by the Singapore Tourism
Board (STB), features life-sized fibreglass lions, each a distinctive
masterpiece of creative ingenuity by Singaporean and international luminaries
from the worlds of art, theatre, music, sport, business and public service.
|
|
The result – a blend of vibrancy
and colour, subtlety and grace all within one exhibition. Mrs S R Nathan is
the Patron of SingArt – A Brush with Lions.
|
|
The first 18 lions from this
exhibition were “unleashed” into the tropical gardens and courtyards of
Raffles Hotel in February this year, where they have charmed Singaporeans and
tourists alike.
|
|
A new pride of 41 lions will now
join them in finding their lairs around the city. All 59 lions will be
displayed at the Paragon, where they were unveiled today, and a selection of
the lions will remain at the Paragon for viewing over the next two days before
they are moved to the streets.
|
|
From May 21 through September
2004, the 41 lions will be found at various locations, along Orchard Road, the
Singapore River and the Civic District, the Arts House, the Merlion Park, The
Esplanade and waterfront and in and around the busy business district of
Raffles Place, Suntec City and Millenia Walk, in addition to the 18 lions at
Raffles Hotel.
|
|
To complement the exhibition,
activities will be organised over the coming months which will enable the
public to participate in this exhibition.
|
|
These include a national
photographic competition, a “People’s Lion” initiative where the public
will be invited to paint a lion, and a Caltex Mini Lions Promotion which will
see mini lions on sale at Caltex Stations for the public to paint as part of a
competition. Further details of these programmes will be released over the
coming weeks.
|
|
Mr Ken Low, Director, Brand
Management and Lifestyle & Events, STB said, “SingArt will greatly
enhance and enliven the visual appeal of Singapore as a destination, injecting
colour and vibrancy into the city. The exhibition will reinforce the Uniquely
Singapore brand while adding another dimension to the already unique
experiences that the city has to offer. Each lion is distinctive, and
together, the full pride of lions represents the cultural melting pot of
ideas, cultures and peoples that is uniquely Singapore. We hope that this
exhibition will be just the beginning of new and exciting art projects which
will further elevate Singapore’s stature as a global city and arts hub.”
|
|
The SingArt lions are up for
adoption giving the opportunity for admirers to own their very own favourite
SingArt lion while at the same time contributing to a charitable cause.
|
|
SingArt lions can be adopted by
submitting a bid on an adoption form either via fax or email. Forms are
available at Raffles Hotel and Caltex stations. The form can also be
downloaded from the SingArt website at www.singart.com.sg.
|
|
The highest bidder for each lion
will have his/her name displayed on a plaque on the adopted lion throughout
the duration of the exhibition. At the end of the exhibition, the lions can
either be taken home by their respective adopters or, should the adopters
wish, continue to be displayed at public venues which will be finalised in due
course.
|
|
Each lion has a reserve price of
S$8,888. Proceeds will go to the adopted charities of this programme, which
include the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and MINDS Towner Gardens
School.
