Source: Art Vital

An In-Conjunction Visual Arts Event of the Singapore Arts Festival 2004

(1 – 18 June 2004 @ St James Power Station & 21 Tanjong Pagar)

Join the revolution as Singapore's new generation of creative guerillas are creating a multi-media art extravaganza!

In this dual-venue exhibition, experience how these artists, designers, architects, photographers and poets from all over the world have joined forces to transform the 1920s colonial heritage site of St James Power Station and a historical shophouse at 21 Tanjong Pagar Road into a wonderland of fantastical surprise for all your six senses.

From street art to fine art, be surprised at what you'll find in unexpected nooks and crannies.  Find treasures in the creative wares up for sale.  Or help build an urban garden by bringing along your own potted plant.  Whether as participant or observer, Reconstruction of a City will alter your perception of the Singapore artscape!

The Concept:

Reconstruction of a City is a site-specific art exhibition which explores how artists and writers perceive their personal life experiences in relation to Singapore as a city.

Cities are about building relationships between various people who participate in activities of common interest in a shared public space.  Yet even as the artists and writers are looking for marks of identity that determine what is Singapore or Singaporean, they also realize they share a common human and urban condition with inhabitants of other cities.

Thus at St James Power Station and 21 Tanjong Pagar, they create a “city” which reflects their visions and illusions – be it recognizable as distinctively Singaporean or with characteristics common with other cities in the world.

Reconstruction of a City is the exhibition component of Visions & Illusions, an ongoing multi-disciplinary project undertaken by over 50 leading young visual artists and writers to explore site-specific installation work.

The Venues:

The exhibition has two components – Reconstruction of a City @ St James Power Station is an exhibition of site-specific installation artworks, while Reconstruction of a City @ 21 Tanjong Pagar is a multi- disciplinary exhibition of site, sound and spectacle.

St James Power Station

The almost-forgotten 1920s heritage of St James Power Station, the first power station in Singapore, has been chosen as the site for this exciting arts project given its size, historical significance and unique architectural design.

This site-specific exhibition is a response to the physical architecture of St James Power Station. Reconstruction of a City shapes a unique heritage site into art activity spaces which are natural to the fabric of our society, raising introspective questions for the artists and providing a forum for a broader debate that will engage audience in Singapore and beyond.

21 Tanjong Pagar

This historical shophouse is set to be a live nerve centre for art of all forms and functions! Located at the crossroads between old Chinatown and the gleaming skyscrapers of the business district, Reconstruction of a City outlines a zone for the alternative and the imaginative - a place where ideas are born and the unexpected can happen.
