Theatres on the Bay and Readymade
Projects are presenting Cubex: Explorations in urban
overgrowth featuring pioneering graffiti artist Delta (Boris Tellegen)
from Amsterdam.
|
|
Curated by Putri Trisulo,
Readymade Projects and Tamares Goh, Esplanade, Cubex is a site-specific public
art commission developed for the main concourse foyer at Esplanade in
conjunction with Bay Beats Festival 2004.
|
|
The public are invited to view the
artist at work from 6 to 12 July between 1pm and 5pm daily. The exhibition is
open for public viewing from 10 Jul - 12 Aug 2004 between 10am and 10pm at the
Concourse Steps, Esplanade. About 500,000 visitors are expected over the
6-week duration.
|
|
A live demonstration of this scale
allows audiences to understand the art of graffiti from a new perspective, one
that goes beyond sub-cultural inclinations and hip hop associations, to probe
deeper into the complex creative process inherent in the art as well as the
artistry that has gained Delta worldwide recognition and accolades.
|
|
Cubex is
the first commission of its kind to showcase graffiti as a major public
artwork in prime city locations and further
explores critical themes relevant to our immediate urban landscape.
|
|
Key issues such as urban renewal
and development come to life in a unique sculptural installation, comprising
modular wood structures, to reflect the deconstruction and subsequent
reformation of a futuristic urbanscape in the artist’s signature
style, a blend of high-precision structural forms gone brilliantly awry to the
free-flow dynamism of graffiti.
|
|
Cubex is
also an opportunity to redefine the value of public space, specifically in its
relation to pushing the boundaries of the contemporary arts in Singapore.
|
|
This ambitious transformation of
the concourse area of the Esplanade, transcends existing conventions of
usage-based functionalities rendering the public arena into an accessible and
dynamic platform for cultivating shared experiences which enhances the
community.
|
|
Limited edition exhibition
merchandise will be sold at The Esplanade shop and retail partner Ambush,
Far East Plaza.
