Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Hi everyone The area around City Hall is abuzz with activities these few weeks. First of all, parade rehearsals, as well as preview shows, are being held every weekend at the Padang as National Day is drawing closer. For those of you not in the know, Singapore celebrates its 35th year of independence on 9 Aug 2000. Then, we have the opening of HKL's CityLink, the first subterranean shopping mall in Singapore. CityLink provides an air-conditioned walkway, complete with lifestyle shops, to let you make that ten-minute walk from City Hall MRT Station to Suntec City and the surrounding shopping centres and offices without being exposed to the vagaries of the weather. In fact, on the subject of CityLink, I have written to HKL's retail manager in charge of the place to get permission to photograph its interior so that you can get a good look at the shopping mall first-hand. Two weeks have passed since I wrote to them. In spite of my reminders, I have yet to get a reply. I am hopeful that HKL will respond positively to my request and will keep you posted on the progress of the matter. As some of you will have already known, our Explore Singapore section has taken you around Singapore River, City Hall, Raffles Hotel and the surrounding areas. Once we have received CityLink's approval, we will be able to let you go on a leisurely stroll from City Hall MRT Station all the way through CityLink to Suntec City and its surrounds - all these taking place while you are in the comfort of your home or office. Advance estimates from the Ministry of Trade & Industry show that gross domestic product (GDP) in the 2nd quarter 2000 grew by 7.7%, in real terms, over the same period last year. London: British motorists who kill because of their reckless driving face life sentences under tough measures being considered by the Home Office. According to The Sunday Times yesterday, the move is part of a wider crackdown that will see maximum fines for speeding rise to more than GBP1,000 (S$2,550), banned drivers being forced to retake their tests, lifetime bans for some killer drivers and drink drivers hit by larger fines and longer bans.

ECONOMY
Singapore's economy grew at a strong 8.5% in the first half of the year following another period of fast growth in the second quarter. Boosted by the galloping expansion in the manufacturing sector, the April-June growth rate is expected to be a sizzling 7.7%.
Consumer prices fell by 0.4% in Jun 2000, as lower costs of transport, communications and clothing more than offset rises in housing, health and education and stationery.
The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices.
The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households.
The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
