Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Thursday 14 Sep 2000 Fewer youths were caught committing crimes in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year. The number of arrested youths, aged between seven and 19, fell by 26%, from 2162 to 1602, said Minister of State for Home Affairs and Law, Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee at the Youth Justice 2000 conference yesterday. Evelyn Tan, 25, became the 7th MediaCorp artiste, and the first from the drama unit, to cross over to join MediaWorks. She resigned on 12 Sep 2000. The Manpower Ministry's labour market report for the second quarter of this year, released yesterday, found that although employment has gone up, more older workers are being left on the shelf in the job market. The percentage of those aged 40 and above among the ranks of the unemployed rose from 31.5% in June 1997 to 43.8% in June this year. In contrast, the proportion of unemployed people under the age of 30 dropped sharply over the same period - from 45% of the total to 29.3%. In March this year, more than 6 in 10 of older workers were hired within three to six months after they were retrenched, but this dropped to 56.6% in June. The report noted a shortage of infocom professionals, engineers, process technicians, nurses and other highly-skilled employees. The national unemployment rate rose from 3.4% to 3.5% in June due to a mismatch in the demand and supply of labour. Two childcare centres yesterday reported a total of 24 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease. The reports came in the wake of the death of two-year-old LAM Rui Qi who may have contracted the disease at Cutie Kidz Playhouse, a childcare centre in Sengkang. Eight other children from Cutie Kidz, and five of their siblings and cousins, have also been diagnosed with the disease. Asia Jakarta: Saboteurs yesterday struck a deadly blow at the heart of corporate Indonesia - the Jakarta Exchange (JSX) building - triggering a fiery explosion in a basement carpark that killed at least 13 people. Sydney: 27 people were taken to hospital after being overcome by chemical fumes at Sydney airport on Wednesday, officials said. Ambulances and police rushed to the airport when passengers and staff were affected by the fumes in the departure area. There were no delays to flights. Beijing: China yesterday began trials simultaneously in five cities in Fujian province, amid tight security in the country's biggest smuggling and corruption scandal. The trials are being held in Xiamen, Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Putian and Zhangzhou, all coastal cities. The scandal involves more than 200 officials from areas under different jurisdictions. Seoul: A historic visit to South Korea by the north's Kim Jong Il is being arranged for next year and the defence ministers of the two Koreas will meet this month, news reports said yesterday. Around the world Berlin: The German government has drafted a law requiring hands-free devices for motorists who use telephones while driving. Final approval is expected in autumn.
