Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700 000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Explore Singapore: Stroll along Orchard Road

|
Coming Soon: A walk through HKL's CityLink:
Singapore's first subterranean mall
Mdm Kang's Kitchen
Chilli Crabs |
Our roving
photographer will accompany you for a stroll along popular
Orchard Road. There's plenty to see along Orchard Road, so take
along a Coke and a hat just in case it gets too hot today. The
heat's pretty bad these few days, so take care!
We shall
start our long walk from City Hall MRT Station, up Stamford
Road, into Penang Rd and then Somerset Road. Next, we move up
Orchard Boulevard and make sort of a U-turn into Orchard Road -
Singapore's favourite shopping belt.
Our Orchard
Road stroll comes in two parts. The first part is where all the
action is. It starts from the beginning of Orchard Road, next to
Tangs Shopping Centre and continues downwards until Centrepoint
Shopping Centre. The second part starts from Orchard Point,
continues to the Istana (where the President lives), Plaza
Singapura - that old favourite, and ends at Cathay.
Today's tour
will only involve the first part of Orchard Road. Next week, we
will continue with Part 2 of our Orchard Road Tour. Click the
logo below to proceed. Oops! I forgot to tell you this - should
you get lost along the way, just click Back to City Hall MRT (at
top right) to get back to City Hall MRT Station. Have fun!

We received our
200,000th hit on 26 Jun 2000!

Workers can expect their
CPF cut to be restored by more than 2% in January if the economy keeps
growing strongly for the rest of the year. They can also expect an
average pay rise of 4 to 6 per cent this year, said National Trades
Union Congress (NTUC) chief and Minister Without Portfolio Lim Boon Heng
yesterday.
Tan Swee Shew, 45, was
fined S$60,000 and had his dump truck forfeited in court yesterday for
dumping three-lorry loads of rubbish illegally on Ministry of Defence
Land last year.

Suva, Fiji: Fiji's military
said yesterday that the overnight release of nine hostages was a
positive sign that the country's eight-week political crisis was heading
for a resolution. Nationalist rebels released nine of their 27 remaining
hostages held since failed businessman George Speight and a band of
gunmen stormed parliament on 19 May 2000 in the name of ethnic Fijian
rights.

ECONOMY
Singapore's economy grew at
a strong 8.5% in the first half of the year following another period of
fast growth in the second quarter. Boosted by the galloping expansion in
the manufacturing sector, the April-June growth rate is expected to be a
sizzling 7.7%.
Consumer prices fell by 0.4%
in Jun 2000, as lower costs of transport, communications and clothing
more than offset rises in housing, health and education and stationery. The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000
dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due
mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of
transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices. The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by
measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased
commonly by most households. The Government has forecast that inflation will
be within 2% this year. |
