Monday with the Editor: Surviving a virus attack..cont'd

     Back to FrontPage

Antivirus.com had this Trend PC-cillin 2000 anti-virus software available on a 30-day trial. We downloaded the software and, miracle of miracles, almost all the 35 viruses were knocked dead, leaving a particularly resistant strain called Troj_MTX.A. We got back to the website where we found a Troj_MTX.A killer called Fix_Mtx.exe and downloaded it immediately (by the way, it comes free!). The resistant strain of virus was instantly killed and our system has since reverted to normal - free of viruses (well, at least for now).

We found out from the Virus Encyclopedia on their website that this particular strain of virus is quite smart in that it blocks the infected user's attempts at reaching anti-virus software websites by causing the Internet browser to crash when an attempt is made.

Trend PC-cillin 2000 is available off the shelf in Singapore at S$49.00. At this price, the software includes a one-year of free updates, which is particularly useful to us as new strains of viruses are born every now and now.

Now, let me make this clear - I am not advertising for the anti-virus software company. I am just relating this story to you so that in the (hopefully unlikely) event that your computer has caught a virus cold, you can do just what we have done to get rid of these nasty pests.

Next, I have something to announce. Effectively immediately we will not be opening attachments sent to us in e-mails. So, when you are sending us an e-mail enquiry, please put everything in the e-mail message body itself - and embed the images within the body of the e-mail message using your e-mail program. By doing this, you will help us greatly and we appreciate it very much.
