Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Sunday 10 Sep 2000 A survey of 500 foreigners living here was done by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) last November. It showed that 9 out of 10 respondents rated the quality of Singapore's roads as good and the road network as efficient. Over 80% of respondents also said that the traffic flow here is smooth, parking space ample and the level of road safety high. As for public transport, 9 out of 10 gave the thumbs-up to the Singapore system for its cleanliness, comfort, safety and efficient network. The results of the survey were released yesterday by the LTA. Certificate of Entitlement (COE) prices for October have all crept up, except for the goods vehicles and buses category. The COE prices for the open category of cars registered the biggest increase, rising by S$3512 to S$37,506. The other COE figures for October are: S$36,684 for cars of 1600cc and below, S$37,001 for bigger cars, and S$1,302 for motorcycles. The British Council gave out 28 bursaries on Friday, with 10 of them going to polytechnic students. The gifts - to Singaporean students who will be pursuing their studies in Britain - are partly to celebrate the new millennium, said Mr David Tupper, the council's assistant director for education. Besides the polytechnic graduates, the awards - worth GBP1,000 (S$2,500) each - were also presented to 15 students with A levels, two graduates of the National Institute of Education and one from the LaSalle Arts College. Asia Beijing: A truck carrying explosives blew up on Friday night killing over 60 people and injuring 173 others in the suburbs of Urumqi, the capital of the restive western Chinese region of Xinjiang. According to the Xinhua news agency, Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji was in Urumqi yesterday to meet former US Secretary of Treasury Robert Rubin. Tokyo: A Russian diplomat suspected of spying left Japan yesterday, escaping prosecution for stealing military secrets in a case that has sparked a row between the two countries. The Russian embassy official, identified as 44-year-old naval attache Captain Victor Bogatenkov, took off from Tokyo's Narita International Airport aboard an Aeroflot flight to Moscow. Around the world London: Britain has been hit suddenly by mass protests over fuel costs, which are the highest in Europe, with hundreds of trucks and tractors blockading major oil refineries and busy highways. Lorry drivers, farmers and motorists all vowed to step up their action over the next few days. They threatened to gridlock Britain and bring the country "to its knees" if the government did not cut the fuel tax. New York: US oil prices are now at dangerously high levels, and could prompt a release of the nation's strategic reserves, leading oil authority Daniel Yergin has warned. He said the levels now made an emergency release of the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) a real possibility if Opec's meeting this weekend did not cool markets.
