Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Friday 8 Sep 2000 With two years to go before the next general election must be called, the search is still on for good men to fill leadership positions in the Singapore of the future, Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew said last night. Failure to do so before the coming election in 2002 would mean trouble when the next one came in 2007, he added. The Environment Ministry (ENV) has singled out 11 estates, including Chinatown, Holland Close and Commonwealth as rat-infested areas. Between one and 150 burrows or rat holes were found at each location. ENV health officer Mr CHANG Ee Boo said that about 5000 rats had been killed since Nov 1999. United Artists' cinemas here will stay open despite the company filing for bankruptcy protection in the United States. This is because United Artists Singapore Theatres, which operates the cinemas, is only 10% owned by the United Artists Theatre chain. The rest of it is held by London media and e-commerce company Pacific Media. The number of children seeking treatment for injuries, caused by skate-scooters, at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital has doubled over the past three months. Compared to about six cases a week in June, the hospital is getting 15 cases weekly now, said Dr Angelina Ang, vice-chairman of its Child Safety Centre's management committee. Most are children aged between six and 12 years. The most common injuries are cuts, bruises, fractures of the upper limbs and bumps on the head. Asia New Delhi: A long-standing demand for dual citizenship by several million Indians living outside India may be finally met when the government tables a new Foreigners Bill later this month. Dual citizenship is one of the issues covered by the Bill, which is sure to be hotly debated in the Indian parliament. Hongkong: Eight Inland Revenue Department (IRD) officers and a former employee were among 32 people arrested for alleged involvement in two separate taxation bribery scams, the Independent Commission Against Corruption said yesterday. Of the 32 arrested, 15 are still being detained by the ICAC while 17 have been released on bail. Bangkok: Drug abuse is rampant in Thai schools because of poor classroom management, badly located toilets and an authoritarian school culture, a researcher has found. The "golden hour" for drug dealing is between 10am and 11am - just before classes begin, Mrs Jirapan Traithipcharas of the General Education Department noted. She said the findings showed that a management style which demanded absolute obedience created a gap between teachers and children. The findings were presented in one of four research papers released by the department after a two-year study. Around the world Washington: Firestone's chief executive apologised formally at a Congressional hearing on Wednesday for tyre failures that have killed scores of people, but the company ran into withering criticism for withholding information that might have saved lives.
