Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Saturday 8 July 2000

Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday said that the MAS will issue licences, before the first quarter of next year, to a new type of financial adviser who will have a wider-than-average range of investment products for customers' financial planning needs, including insurance policies, unit trusts and stocks. The independent financial advisers will not be connected with banks, insurance companies or fund managers. This means that they will represent the interests of their clients, not the financial institution they represent.

The Housing & Development Board (HDB) plans to take back three flats whose occupiers were convicted of "killer litter" offences. It will acquire all three flats compulsorily. These will be the first flats reported to be acquired for this reason since 1991 when a family who lived in a rented flat in Dover Rd was asked to leave after being convicted twice for killer litter offences.

A former POSBank manager who rose from bank teller to branch manager was yesterday jailed for four years by a discourt court for misappropriating S$320,000 from the bank. Jaslyn Chee Lai Meng, 38, took S320,000 from a branch she was managing and then stole another S$325,000 to cover up the first theft.

A delivery man raped his eight-year-old daughter in the living room of their Hougang flat. He raped her twice when she was 11. He also molested her once when she was 13. The 42-year-old man was yesterday jailed for 11 years and ordered to be given 24 strokes of the cane. The court heard that he first raped her in 1992. The girl reported the rapes to police on 1 Feb 2000. She is now in a girls' home.

A 10-year-old boy was found dead at the foot of his block of flats at Blk 877 in Tampines St 84  on Thursday night. He lived on the 10th storey. Png Ming Kian was the youngest of three children in the family. His death brings to three the number of children falling from high-rise blocks this year. Since January, two other boys, both aged three, had fallen when left alone at home. One of them died while the other survived.

Asia

Sydney: Sydney taxi drivers and the companies they work for have been told to improve their services or face heavier fines after rising complaints from visitors that too many simply got lost. New South Wales Transport Minister Carl Scully said on Thursday that locals and visitors were exasperated with cabbies' lack of local knowledge.

Around the world

London: Runaway Oxford University maths prodigy Sufiah Yusof has been found alive and well by police in a London suburb, but wants her parents kept away from her.

ECONOMY

Consumer prices fell by 0.4% in Jun 2000, as lower costs of transport, communications and clothing more than offset rises in housing, health and education and stationery.

The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices.

The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households.

The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
