Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Tuesday 5 Sep 2000 Shopping centre TANGS and its sister store, TANGS STUDIO, will not open this Thursday as a mark of respect for its founder, TANG Choon Keng, who died in his home on Sunday. The funeral itself will be held at the Newton Life Church on Thursday at 1pm. In a statement, TANGS said services at his wake will be at 8pm today and tomorrow at his home at 33, St Thomas Walk. The Health Ministry has launched a "Return to Nursing" scheme under which about 500 former nurses, who say they are willing to go back to work, will be given two to three months of training in theory and clinical practices. The first batch of 15 returned nurses began their training last month at Changi General Hospital, KK Women's And Children's Hospital and the National Heart Centre. Singapore faces a shortage of about 650 nurses, in spite of hospitals bringing in foreign nurses. Last year, a survey of 2000 former nurses by the ministry found that one in four was willing to return to work. But three in five want to work part-time and one in three is willing to work full-time but with regular hours. A stockbroking firm is suing its former chief executive officer for allegedly causing some S$44 million in trading losses. AMS Securities claims that Mr THIO Gwan Choon, 39, failed to "exercise due care and diligence" in approving trading and credit limits for customers and monitoring their trading activities. A Secondary 3 debater from Anglo Chinese School (Independent) was cheered by a crowd when he gave an impromptu speech at Speakers' Corner about democracy in Singapore. 15-year-old CHOO Zheng Xi gave a 10-minute speech about how he felt the government was drifting away from the people and why there should be more democracy in Singapore. Asia New Delhi: A court held 35 people, including some politicians, guilty of kidnapping and raping a 16-year-old girl kept captive for more than a month four years ago, said a news report. The convicts, which include three women, are in police custody in Kottayam in Kerala state, 2150 km south of New Delhi. The rape case rocked Kerala and became a major political issue during parliamentary elections last year. Beijing: Four criminals behind one of China's most violent robberies were still on the loose yesterday, as the media speculated that their crime could be linked to the muder of a local bank executive. 4000 police officers were combing Changde city in central Hunan province in an effort to find the robbers who attacked a bank on Friday. The robbers for some reason lost their nerve and fled empty-handed, leaving seven people dead. Hongkong: In another series of blunders by the Hongkong Immigration authorities, a Vietnamese tourist was held for 21 days after her passport was stolen. Ms Nguyen Thi Yen Loan, 29, was detained during a routine police check and, while in detention, claimed police hit her on the head with a file. The tourist, who is waiting for a new passport, claimed she was misled by a police interpreter into signing a police statement saying she had overstayed. Around the world London: Whites will be an ethnic minority in Britain by the end of the decade. Analysis of official figures shows that, at present fertility rates and levels of immigration, there will be more non-whites than whites by 2100. According to a report in The Observer, it would be the first time in history that a major indigenous population has voluntarily become a minority, rather than through war, famine or disease. New York: New figures from the Bureau of Labour Statistics show that the number of immigrant workers jumped to 15.7 million last year, up 17% from three years earlier. Nearly five million of these are said to be illegal immigrants. This influx - immigration workers now make up 12% of the nation's workers - is having profound effects on the work force and the economy, helping to hold down wages in unskilled occupations and giving many companies the employees they need to expand. Now, software companies, farmers, hotel chains and others desperate for workers are pressuring Congress to enact legislation that would admit hundreds of thousands of additional immigrants each year.
