Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Get For Me Singapore is now 1,000 pages thick!
Get For Me Singapore website was launched on 28 November 1999. We started with barely a few pages. Today, eight months later, we are 1,000 pages thick. Our aim was and will always be to provide information on Singapore which you will find useful. We started as a rudimentary website serving expatriates and overseas-based Singaporeans. Over time, we developed arms and legs and fine-tuned our content. It is our wish now to spread our wings and become a community Internet content provider for consumers. Our content will expand to include more community-based programmes. However, the change will be gradual - we cannot become something else overnight. We need to let our website evolve its identity. Some of our overseas visitors have been seeking information on stuff, such as accommodation in Barcelona, which we are unable to provide presently without diluting our focus - which is Singapore. But, we are opening a section on Global Cities soon to provide information on such cities. If these new web-pages progress into veritable one-stop information centres on the cities, so be it. We'll let nature take its course. Already, in response to request from owners of some websites with content outside the focus of Singapore, we have included their websites under Global heading. These changes are natural and in response to a changing environment. In the months to come, we will take a step back and look at our facade again to see how Get For Me Singapore has progressed. The new kid on the block, SPH MediaWorks, has scored a coup by netting media luminaries Man Shu Sum and Andrea Teo to fill key positions in its newly-formed broadcast subsidiary. Mr Man has 25 years of broacasting experience, of which 19 years was spent with Television Corporation of Singapore. Ms Teo is best known for steering Singapore's top sitcoms, like Under One Roof, and Phua Chu Kang.
A kindergarten teacher fell 11 storeys to her death while trying to enter her parents' flat through a window on Saturday morning. Her parents live in Bedok North. Mdm Qamariah Amat, 29, was desperate to check her ailing mother and became worried when one one answered the bell and repeated knocks on the door. She tried to enter the flat by climbing through the living-room window but lost her balance and fell.

Beijing: China sentenced a senior official to death yesterday for bribery in a high-level prosecution aimed at soothing public anger over corruption. Cheng Kejie, a former vice-chairman of the influential Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), was convicted in a Beijing court of accepting 41 million yuan (S$8.2 million) in bribes while he was provincial governor of the southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the official Xinhua news agency said.

Toronto: A British Airways concorde carrying 66 people from London to New York had to make an emergency stop in eastern Canada after a crew member smelled fuel in the cabin, the airline said. Emergency vehicles were on alert on Sunday as the Concorde descended into the Gander, Newfoundland, airport but the landing went ahead without incident, said Canada's Transportation Ministry.
