Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

TIBS Taxis is the last of the taxi operators in Singapore to raise its taxi fares. From Monday, 3 Jul 2000, TIBS Taxis will charge an average of 35 cents more for every trip taken in their taxis.

Their new fare structure is simpler to understand. There are no surcharges; such as mid-night charge, CBD area surcharge, and peak-hour surcharge; for commuters to worry their heads over. In their place are higher flag-down and distance-based fares.

Comfort & Yellow Top started the ball rolling by charging higher fares on 12 Jun 2000, followed by CityCab on 26 Jun 2000.

Now that all the taxi operators have raised their fares, it is possible to table the fares and compare them. More...

Saturday 1 July 2000

In Parliament yesterday, Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew shared with MPs his more than 30 years of experience grappling with the problem of ministerial pay, recounting how the Government arrived at its latest system of fixing the formula. When he stepped down as Prime Minister in 1990, the per capita GDP was S$22,000 up from S$1300 in 1959. Ten years after Mr Goh took over as PM, it is S$37,000. Mr Lee warned that if the present team does not get more good men to join them in the next election, there will be hiatus down the road.

Creative Technology is set to launch sales of its newest creation - the Nomad Jukebox digital audio player which can store 2000 songs - by August 2000. The new device will sell for about S$499 (S$850) each. Mr Sim Wong Hoo said he expects the Nomad Jukebox to eventually outsell his company's flagship Sound Blaster which has sold 100 million units in the past ten years.

Singapore Airlines ex-employee Teo Cheng Kiat was yesterday sentenced to a total of 24 years in jail after he had pleaded guilty to 10 charges of misappropriating S$31 million from SIA between June 1996 and January this year.

Asia

Jakarta: Rescue teams were, last night, no closer to finding any trace of an overcrowed ferry or the nearly 500 people on board who disappeared in shark-infested waters off the coast of Sulawesi 30 hours after fleeing their riot-torn homeland.

Around the world

Washington: Congressman Norman Mineta, who was nominated US Commerce Secretary on Thursday, has travelled a long road to fulfilling an American dream for fellow Asian -Americans and breaking the glass ceiling for the diverse community. The choice of the Japanese-American by President Bill Clinton marks the first time that an American of Asian origin has been named to the cabinet and makes the administration more reflective of America.

ECONOMY

Consumer prices fell by 0.4% in Jun 2000, as lower costs of transport, communications and clothing more than offset rises in housing, health and education and stationery.

The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices.

The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households.

The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
