A certificate is awarded to a candidate who obtains a Grade 5 or better in at least one subject. 10,197 (99.4%) pupils from the Normal (Academic) Course and 5,476 (98.6%) pupils from the Normal (Technical) Course are awarded certificates in the 2001 examination.

Pupils in the Normal (Academic) Course who obtain an aggregate not exceeding 10 points in their 3 best subjects and a Grade 5 or better in English Language (Syllabus A) will be promoted to the Secondary 5 Normal Course in 2002. 8,122 pupils (79.2%) are eligible for promotion.

For progression to the Secondary 5 Normal Course, pupils in the Normal (Technical) Course have to obtain a Grade 1 in English Language (Syllabus T) and Mathematics (Syllabus T) and a Grade 3 or better in a third subject, in one sitting. Based on the 2001 results, no pupil from Normal (Technical) Course is eligible for S5N in 2002.

All Normal course students who have completed their secondary education in 2001 can apply to further their studies at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).

Of the 1,721 private candidates who sat the examination, 952 (55.3%) are awarded certificates.

School candidates have been issued with their results slips by their respective schools. Private candidates will be informed of their results by post and may also obtain their results through the MOE Internet address http://www.moe.edu.sg/exams after 11 a.m. from 19 Dec 2001.
