The Government has accepted the NWC’s revised wage guidelines for 2001-2002.

Since the NWC met in April and May this year, the global economic environment has deteriorated drastically. Growth in most major economies and Asian economies fell. Singapore’s economy has also entered a recession as a result of the sharp drop in external demand.

MTI has therefore revised Singapore’s GDP growth forecast for 2001 downwards from 3.5% - 5.5% to negative 3%. The economic outlook remains poor. MTI has estimated a GDP growth of –2% to +2% in 2002.

The labour market has weakened significantly. Total employment in the third quarter of this year fell by 12,500, while the average unemployment rate rose to 3.8%. Jobs have become scarce. For every 100 job seekers, the number of job vacancies was 32 in September 2001 compared to 61 in June 2001.

For the first 9 months of this year, more than 17,000 workers were retrenched. For the whole of 2001, total number of retrenched workers is expected to reach 25,000.
